Metaphor became the subject of interest for many researchers after Lakoff and Johnson’s(1980) Conceptual Theory was adopted as a model for comparison. However, the main purpose of the present study was to investigate the universality of emotion metaphorical conceptualization. This is because most studies pay little attention to the fact that the conceptualization of emotion can also have variation across cultures.
This study aims to address the following questions: First, how are emotion metaphors conceptualized in two distinct cultures (Korea and Japan)? Second, how can culture be employed to conceptualize Korean-Japanese idioms? To address these questions, this study chose Korean-Japanese idioms through the corpus database, limiting its scope to seven basic emotions: happiness, sadness, anger, fear, shame, joy, hate.
Chapter two, researches what factors can be included in each emotion and how the emotion idioms can be divided into three types: “typical emotion idiom” which represents a state of emotion; “idiom of source of emotion” which represents sources of emotion; and “idiom of results of emotion” which represents results that emotions trigger.
Chapter three, researches how Korean and Japanese emotion idioms are conceptualized into the source domain on the basis of similarities between emotion idioms and those factors included in emotions.
The results of the study show that both Korean and Japanese idioms of happiness are conceptualized metaphorically as admiration, gaiety, hope, a sensation of freedom, comfort, self-confidence, act, expression of body, laughter, voice, heart palpitations and increase in body temperature, however, only Korean idioms of happiness are conceptualized metaphorically as satisfaction.
Both Korean and Japanese idioms of sadness are conceptualized metaphorically as pain, depression, despair, crying, and expression of body but only Korean idioms are conceptualized metaphorically as worry, pressure, disease, and increase in body temperature.
Both Korean and Japanese idioms of anger are conceptualized metaphorically as a revengeful spirit, expression of body, increase in body temperature, however, only Korean idioms are conceptualized metaphorically as depression, act, voice, a change of complexion, and damage to the internal organs.
Both Korean and Japanese idioms of fear are conceptualized metaphorically as fright, act, expression of body, decrease in body temperature, heart palpitations, a contraction of the body, and a change of complexion, while only Korean idioms are conceptualized metaphorically as pressingness and sense of guilt.
Both Korean and Japanese idioms of shame are conceptualized metaphorically as defamation, sense of inferiority, act, increase in body temperature and change of complexion, and no categories of difference are shown between the two sets of idioms.
Both Korean and Japanese idioms of love are conceptualized metaphorically as interest, longing, dearness, and heart palpitations, but only Japanese idioms of love are conceptualized metaphorically as increase in body temperature.
Both Korean and Japanese idioms of hate are conceptualized metaphorically as disgust, repulsion, contempt, act, and expression of body, but only Korean idioms are conceptualized metaphorically as jealousy, hatred, and damage to the internal organs.
Chapter four, examines the similarities and differences between Korean and Japanese emotion idioms in terms of conceptual metaphors. Findings show that Korean and Japanese emotion idioms have a high degree of similarity in the use of metaphorical expressions related to the body parts and bodily experience. However, this paper has also shown the six main factors that cause Korean and Japanese emotion idioms to appear differently.
First, the difference of Confucian culture between the two Nations is one cause of differences in Korean and Japanese emotion idioms. This is because Confucian culture remains strong in Korean culture prompts anger idioms being conceptualized as fire, heat, and explosion. Second, Korean “Heung culture” is a factor that causes Korean and Japanese metaphors of happiness idioms to appear differently. Korean happiness idioms are conceptualized as gaiety, and dance, however Japanese happiness idioms are not conceptualized as gaiety, and dance. Third, Korean “Han emotion” is a factor that triggers Korean and Japanese metaphors of sadness idioms to appear differently. Korean sadness idioms are conceptualized as worry, pressure, disease and fire because of “Han emotion”, but Japanese emotion idioms are not conceptualized as worry, pressure, disease and fire. Fourth, Japanese “Hwa culture” are a factor that causes Korean and Japanese emotion idioms to appear differently. Japanese emotion idioms are not not conceptualized as worry, pressure, disease, and fire because of “Hwa culture”. Fifth, “shame culture” is a factor that triggers Korean and Japanese metaphors of shame idioms to appear differently. Japanese shame idioms are expressed as tension because of the shame culture that remains strong in Japanese society. Sixth, the differences in oriental medicine development is one of factor that causes Korean and Japanese emotion idioms to appear differently, Korean anger and hate idioms are conceptualized as damage to the internal organs because of oriental medicine remaining widespread in Korean society.
This study provides some support for the claim by cognitive linguistic theories that the conceptualization of emotion has universality across cultures and languages. However, at the same time, the conceptualization of emotion can also have variation across cultures and languages.
In addition, this study opens up a new perspective in contrastive study of Japanese and Korean.
Finally, this study is a guideline for a comparative study on emotion idioms.
