The present study analyzes the ways in which senior citizens living in Chinese cities reconstruct their old age in response to the already constructed discourse on old age through their experience with collective physical training, which is known to be a culture specific to the country. To achieve this goal, the present researcher conducted research on senior citizens aged 60 or above who participated in collective physical training in Zizhuyuan Park (“Purple Bamboo Park”) in Beijing for approximately five months from the end of September 2014 to the end of February 2015.
Originating from the collective exercise initiated and led by the state during the Mao Zedong era (1949-1976), the culture of collective physical training has developed amidst the state’s strategy for the formation of the modernized subject advocated in each period up to the current, post-Mao era. Against such a backdrop, participants in collective physical training have endeavored to become modern subjects devoted to the state for the construction of socialism during the Mao era and modern subjects embodying the discipline of self-management whereby individuals prepare for their own old age since China’s adoption of an open door policy, respectively.
In particular, because their main participants are middle-aged people and senior citizens, collective physical training has often been addressed by the press and other media in connection with the problem of senior citizens. Since China’s opening of its doors to the world, senior citizens who fail to adapt to a swiftly changing society have been determined as people without economic value, and the collective physical training in which they engage likewise has been described as a premodern relic that must disappear.
Old age has thus tended to be defined as a negative concept in Chinese society. The concept of old age current in Chinese society has been reproduced through the discourse on old age. The senior welfare policy of the government under the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the dominant discourse on old age reproduced by diverse mass media and medical circles have defined old age uniformly. The dominant discourse on old age overlooks the particular life experiences of individuals and summarily determines those aged 60 or above as “elderly” from the perspective of chronological age (CA). Moreover, old age has been determined as an object of support and of physical and mental inability. On the other hand, in the post-Mao era, when the state is no longer fully responsible for individuals’ lives, the dominant discourse on old age urges participants to prepare for their own old age.
In a reality that marginalizes old age, participants who have embodied the dominant discourse on old age have conformed to the modernization discourse on self-management to survive. With memories of communal life during the Mao era intact, they have come to take part in collective physical training to protect themselves for reasons including still incomplete welfare policy and distrust of medical accessibility. Participants have survived by constructing networks to take care of one another, with collective physical training as a medium.
On the other hand, however, participation in collective physical training while embodying the modernization discourse on self-management has also served as the driving force for responding to the dominant discourse on old age, which dismisses participants as negative objects. It is precisely at this point that ruptures occur. While the state has defined collective physical training as a legacy of the Mao era and senior citizens as unproductive objects of support and sought to render them invisible, participants have brought this legacy of the past to the surface once again, with the discourse on self-management advocated by the state as a medium. In particular, through an emphasis on the concept of “activities” (huodong), participants demonstrate that they are alive as beings still useful to society. They stress that, unlike other “elderly” people, they are physically and mentally active. More specifically, participants tend to redefine their own old age in response to the existing discourse on old age. Unlike the methodology of the dominant discourse on old age, which defines senior citizens and health in old age from the perspective of CA or physical aging, participants emphasize “ideas”(sixiang), or the epistemological aspect. What is important is maintaining an active idea where participants do not perceive themselves as “elderly.”
In the end, the senior subject has been presented in two directions in Chinese society. The first is the premodern subject as represented in the dominant discourse on old age, and the other is the modern subject of self-management. Amidst a complex situation, participants have adopted the strategy of becoming modern subjects of self-management and responding to the dominant discourse on old age for their own survival, with collective physical training as a medium. Of course, because participants, too, are affected by the dominant discourse on old age, it is difficult to say that their resistance to it is full-fledged. Nevertheless, the present study argues that participants exhibit a subjective aspect in that they are aware of a reality in which the existing discourse on old age acts as power and endeavor to reconstruct their old age in response.
