A Buddhist boy attendant (henceforth BBA) is called kumara or kumakara in Sanskrit, and is transcribed as gumara or gumagara in Chinese Characters. Its general meanings are as follows: It refers to a boy being trained to be a Buddhist monk, a son of Buddha who realized the truth, or a heavenly child standing next to Buddhist saints. BBAs carry the image of a child on a lotus flower to be born again in the heaven. They have various names such as Munsoo, Bohyun, Sunjae, and Myungbujon. Out of these, Myungbujon is also named as the good-and-evil BBA, for his duty of recording good and evil deeds of all human beings. He also functions to offer food to Buddha, while staying near the saints.
The Myungbu temple, where the good-and-evil BBA was enshrined, were mostly established in the late period of Chosun Dynasty. There are three main reasons for this. The first reason is that Buddhist rituals were prevalent in that period for the purpose of comforting the common people who were afflicted with physical and mental pains from various wars. The second reason is related to bliss-seeking attitudes of the public caused by the popularization of Buddhism. The third reason is related to the civil virtues of good-seeking principles of Taoism similar to the sense of filial piety of that time. This sense of filial piety were also compatible with the Buddhist ritual of Providence, in which the people prayed for the deceased ones so that they could quickly become reincarnated as good humans or be born again in the heaven.
Since the 17th century, the general images of BBAs have been two topknots of hair, one piece of long gown worn from the neck all the way down to the ankles, a long scarf worn around the shoulders down to the ankles, a short cover skirt tied around the waist, and items of service for Buddha held in the hands.
The number of BBAs is greater than the other Buddhist statues and their appearances vary from region to region, so the outward looks of BBAs cannot be generalized to one fixed image-frame. As the time passed from the 17th century through the 18th into the 19the century, however, their looks gradually changed into those of real children that people could easily see around them. These various images of BBAs all show the free and innocent looks of children, which are not fixed or tainted by one particular image-frame.
The BBAs, on the other hand, can also be regarded as realistic images most vividly illustrating the characteristics of the relevant times. These aspects can be clearly seen in the items held in their hands, most of which symbolize people's desires to be born again in the heaven, protection of the deceased on their path to the heaven, and the elimination of evil things.
The symbolisms of Myungbujon BBA as the recorder of good & evil deeds of human beings are: (1) a personal entity of reincarnation prior to receiving a new life after death (2) a prayer for the souls of the dead. Along with these symbolisms as a pure religious entity, the image of the BBA strongly embraces peoples' good-seeking desire of approaching Buddha and conveying their wishes to Him.
The Myungbujon BBA deeply soothed with his bright and warm smile the pains of the 17th century people, and helped them overcome the fear of death by showing that a happy life is possible after death in the heaven. Its smiling face made people also smile, and this motivated them to realized the truth that one must practice charities in spite of the hardships of life in the present world. The people who came to get an optimistic view of their lives from the BBA created the Myungbu temple as an active life space where a life in the present world is more strongly cherished.
