The purpose of this study is to examine the process of reconstructing Japan’s cultural identity through the artistic activities of Takashi Murakami as an artist, curator and arts entrepreneur. When Murakami began his artistic activities in the 1990s, Japan’s pride as an economic power had been shaken after the burst of its bubble economy. Japan comprehensively underwent a crisis in its political and social systems that had led Japan after the war in this period referred to as “The Lost Decade”. This crisis made the Japanese people look back on their entire social systems primarily designed by the United States after the war. A movement to overcome this crisis through the reconstruction of Japan’s identity occurred in each field of Japanese society and Murakami also seriously considered the direction of contemporary Japanese art while making diverse forays into criticizing Japan’s preexisting art system.
Murakami was credited as one of the rising stars in the Japanese art scene when his art was introduced in the March 1992 issue of『Bijutsu Techo(美術手帖)』, a Japanese monthly art magazine as part of Japanese Neo Pop alongside other artistic of his time whose art was predicted upon Otaku culture, a subculture of people with obsessive interests. However, his one-year study in the United States serves as an opportunity to perceive the status of contemporary Japanese art, a non-mainstream art in the global art scene, and explore how to survive in the world with his japanese cultural identity. Afterwards, he engaged in curating exhibitions particularly including the ‘Superflat Triology’(2000-2005) and was involved in multifarious commercial activities including his operation of Kaikaikiki, a giant company handling the production and promotion of Murakami’s artworks and projects. Such endeavors make him distinguishable from other Japanese Neo Pop Artists.
First of all, his curating of the Superflat Triology that introduced the hallmarks of his artistic endeavors and projects and the connection of their birth to the Western art world was first step to reshape Japan’s cultural identity. Through《Super Flat》(2000), Murakami saw an absence of hierarchy between highbrow art and popular culture and two-dimensional composition as the underlying concept of Superflat and intrinsic feature of Japanese art. In the exhibitions such as 《Coloriage》 (2002) and《Little Boy》(2005), he pointed out that the Meiji Restoration and Japan’s defeat in the Asian, Pacific War were the causes of contemporary Japanese art's loss of identity, proving the correlation between such events and Japan’s subculture through his works that go beyond times and genres.
He also aggressively engaged in commercial activities through Kaikai kiki, an art-related company Murakami himself founded. This was his attempt to gain a spring board for contemporary Japanese art through the creation of a Japanese art business model. He invested his wealth and the reputation he gained through his constant collaboration with other giant corporations into the formation of a system to renovate closed Japanese contemporary art. His noteworthy activities include the organization of an art fair and competition called Geisai(芸祭) and the operation of an educational program called Chamber(ちゃんば). Through these programs he fostered young Japanese artists as a force of innovation in Japanese art. He also challenged the Western art scene by passing his knowhow for success in the global art market to those artists.
Murakami also concretely portrayed Japan’s cultural identity through his artistic activities based on Japanese subculture and traditional painting. He made efforts to encapsulate their own identity in contrast with Modernism in order to advance to the Western art scene after studying in the United States. However, the 2011 earthquake off the Pacific coast of Tohoku served as an opportunity to reconsider the identity he had pursued. He intended to present the identity Japanese people earnestly had wanted through <500 Arhats>(2012) that mobilized all the achievements of his knowhow and research by the collective production system.
As such, Murakami and his endeavors are of significance art historically in that he expanded the concept of contemporary art and established the new image of artists by aggressively realizing his ideas and assertions not only through the production of artworks but also through exhibition curating and commercial activities. However, previous studies on his art and endeavors mainly focused on why he employed the images and traits of subculture in his work and his active commercial enterprises. They did not explore any association between his diverse activities and his artistic intents. Accordingly, this study is of significance in that it reveals that a wide range of his activities were part of the process of overcoming the identity crisis Japanese society faced in the 1990s by reestablishing its cultural identity through his diverse activities. This denotes his will to overcome Japanese society’s inferiority complex about Western society and to heal its trauma.
