The purpose of this study was to explore the postcard images containing the contents of anti-women’s suffrage in England from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. Focus on the postcard images of anti-women’s suffrage that has been understudied so far, the study analyzed how the prevailing women-related discourse excluding women from the political domain and the sociocultural background of the time were reflected in the postcard images of anti-women’s suffrage.
Due to the dominant discourse claiming inferiority of women, women had long been excluded from political participation from ancient times. Western philosophy categorized men and women dichotomously and defined women, who were considered inferior to men, as insufficient to have political power. This was constantly asserted through various discourses regardless of times. Moreover, men had set the framework of ideal women according to their control logic and forced all women to fit the framework. As a result, women had been given only the role of a chaste wife and a sacrificial mother.
Women who had been excluded from political participation began to claim political rights attributed to the social changes of the 19th century. With the advent of the Enlightenment, the values of freedom and equality were applied to the majority of men, and with the emergence of the middle class by the Industrial Revolution, men’s suffrage gradually expanded. Yet, women were still deprived of the improved opportunities in the political, social, and educational domains. Furthermore, various strands of feminist movement raised at the time were limited by the absence of political power. Thus, women’s suffrage emerged as a priority for women’s rights.
The women's suffrage movement for women's political rights was unprecedentedly underway in an organizational and systematical way, however, the voices against women's suffrage were also strong. At that time, there was a well-established ideology of ‘separate realms' that men should be responsible for politics in a public realm and women for home in a private realm. Therefore, most people opposed women's suffrage, negatively seeing women suffragettes.
In this context, the images abhorred in the society at the time were applied to of woman suffragettes, which spread through various media, especially postcards. In those days, postcards were popular because of their small size, low cost, and easy-to-understand illustrations; they were widely used as a popular mean of communication. Most postcards of anti-women’s suffrage were produced and circulated separately from the anti-women's suffrage camps.
Developing the previous studies of superficial and intuitive interpretations of anti-women’s suffrage images, this study paid attention to the overwrap of misogyny and the images of women suffragettes. The study classified the images into gender subversion, hysteria, and femme fatale according to the aspects of hate. First, the images of women suffragettes embodied an anxiety that women would overthrow the male-dominated existing order. Women suffragettes were not simply described as ugly figures but also as physically larger and more aggressive than men. This reflected men's anxiety about the growth of women’s rights, and misogyny that these images produced was a means to maintain the hegemony of men.
With regard to the images of hysterical women suffragettes, the images of mental illness disgusted as a subject of punishment and alienation in the 19th century were revealed, beginning from an ancient perspective female sex as imperfect and morbid. A representative mental illness, hysteria, was visualized as a woman with glaring eyes in various media. These images, which were also found in the postcards portraying women suffragettes, projected them as mentally ill and justified the punishment and alienation.
Finally, the images of women suffragettes with ideal appearance were portrayed as femme fatales seducing and destroying men. Especially in Europe in the late 19th century, the representation of femme fatales changed from the existing romantic idealization to the destructive feature of urban prostitutes, which was equally applied to women suffragettes drawn on postcards. Such representation acted as a kind of indulgence created to conceal men's disturbed self-consciousness.
Thus, the images of women suffragettes in the anti-women’s suffrage postcard were not simply a depiction of ugly women but an elaborately structured history of misogyny. The significance of the study is to reveal the solid structure of misogyny by examining the women-related discourse and analyzing the images of anti-women's suffrage postcards based on the sociocultural characteristics from the 19th century to the early 20th century.
