The goals of science education are not limited to teaching students to understand scientific knowledge and methods but emphasize the development of their insight and ability required to practice citizenship efficiently. There is a consensus among science educators that understanding ‘nature of science (NOS)’ is vital to the development of the scientifically literate citizenry.
The inherent value of NOS comes out when it shows authentic science through various scholastic lenses, and NOS is a fundamental area which guides teachers to portray science accurately to students. However, K-12 teachers typically do not possess adequate concepts of NOS and these are not automatically or necessarily translated into classroom practices. In these respects, there are several prerequisites for teaching NOS effectively; to enhance the teachers’ ‘NOS-specific professional knowledge (NOS-SPK)’ and to inspire them towards a more positive intention of teaching NOS in order to improve teaching and learning NOS, because heretofore learning NOS has been regarded as a by-product of learners’ engagement in science-based activities or learners’ just facing science rather than a result from their cognitive learning.
The purpose of this research has two folds. One is to investigate the aspects of prospective earth science teachers’ NOS-PCK, and the other is to describe the relationship among their NOS-PCK, orientation to teaching science, and beliefs about teaching NOS in the aspect of the intention of integrating NOS in their future classroom practices within a structure of intervention for the development of the expertise to teach NOS.
Five prospective earth science teachers participated in the professional development program, which was implemented in the form of an NOS-dedicated intensive course for 12 contact hours within 10 weeks. NOS-SPK included in the program focused on two components. One is general NOS tenets and ‘family resemblance approach to NOS (FRA-NOS)’ and the other is ‘explicit and reflective approaches (ERA)’ as content knowledge and strategies. The program incorporated varied degrees of contextualization of science contents and endeavored to provide prospective teachers with opportunities to support efficient understanding of NOS and ERA through the use of some reading materials and activities.
Data included prospective teachers’ 1) written and interviewed responses for open-ended questionnaires regarding the ideas about NOS, orientation to teaching science from the starting point of the program and changes in beliefs about teaching NOS in the process of and as a result of the program, 2) pre and post written responses and follow-up interviews of ‘Views on the Nature of Science questionnaire-C (VNOS-C)’ and ‘Views about Scientific Inquiry (VASI)’, 3) written responses for open-ended questionnaires regarding the perception of FRA-NOS, 4) pre and post Likert scale responses to ‘the Survey of Beliefs about Teaching NOS’ regarding seven aspects of beliefs about and intention of teaching NOS; self-efficacy, outcome expectancy, perceived and described norms, cognitive and affective attitudes, intention of integrating NOS in their future classroom practices, 5) reflective writings concerned with what aspects of NOS to teach and how to teach those aspects in conjunction with science contents, and 6) lesson plans used in the field training.
The results of this case study, drawn from the analysis of the collected materials above, are as follows.
First, the investigation into the aspects of five prospective teachers’ NOS-PCK shows the following two results.
1) Five prospective teachers recognized students’ understanding NOS as a product of students’ cognitive learning like other science content knowledge, and all prospective teachers’ cognitive understanding of NOS content knowledge shifted toward more aligned level for teaching NOS adequately. Three out of five prospective teachers applied informed knowledge of NOS and ERA effectively to their writings expressing sophisticated rationale for their choices. However, two of them showed less applicability to ERA than understanding NOS content knowledge though they admitted the development of their abilities to apply a specific and reflective approach as a strategy for teaching NOS.
2) Two out of the five prospective teachers expressed that they had covered the tentative aspect of science in their field training classes, but they included no NOS contents specifically as a learning goal in their teaching plans. One prospective teacher specified the goal related to NOS in her teaching plan used in the student teaching process and put NOS contents naturally into practice in the class. Though the opportunity for reflective thinking was not given to students, this is a good case in which a prospective teacher implemented her intention of teaching NOS. Another two prospective teachers expressed that, in spite of their positive intention of teaching NOS, they had taught no NOS contents because of some situational restrictions.
Conclusively, prospective teachers who experienced their teaching practices as student teachers in the classroom of a junior high or high school faced the important fact that many students had no strong willingness to learn science and science teachers had a lot of difficulties in teaching their subject to students uninterested in science, and it is clear that their experiences led them to be confronted with the hardships in teaching NOS in the science classes.
Second, in an investigation into the relationship among their NOS-PCK, orientation to teaching science, beliefs about teaching NOS, and intention of integrating NOS in their future classroom, the change of five prospective teachers’ intention of teaching NOS through the NOS-professional development program is divided into two groups; three participants who have their strong mind more in favor of teaching NOS and two participants who change their mind to be against teaching NOS.
Two prospective teachers who are sure to be against teaching NOS have objectivists’ epistemology in that they regard science as a system of holy logic which seeks natural truth and they show their traditional pedagogical views, which are teacher-centered. They also express that the most important goal of teaching science is students’ understanding scientific knowledge. Therefore, as a result of applying their belief that teaching NOS is not helpful for students’ learning science, they avoided teaching NOS.
On the contrary to the above two participants, three with their strong positive intention to teach NOS aimed at student-centered, constructive teaching and learning and they revealed constructivists’ epistemology of science. As a result, three prospective earth science teachers showed more positive attitudes toward the inclusion of the universality of science as well as the controversy of the concept of NOS itself, and the attributes of the external sociological aspects of science included in the FRA-NOS model.
Based on the results of this case study, three essential points are discussed; 1) some implications of the commonality and diversity found in the patterns of the five prospective earth science teachers’ NOS-PCK, 2) the low correlation between the prospective earth science teachers’ personal development in NOS-PCK and their intention to teach NOS, and 3) the influence of their prior epistemology of science and perceptions of the goals of science education on the development of their willingness to teach NOS.
Next, three important ideas are proposed; 1) some implications related to NOS education for science teachers, which were identified through the input of a professional development program of NOS to meet the purposes of this study, 2) practical discussions about both contents and methods to enhance prospective science teachers’ professional ability to teach NOS, and 3) the right direction in which the future-oriented science education of NOS should move forward.
Finally, some suggestions for the purpose of promoting more further studies are given, which take the limitations of this study into consideration.
