Based on the data of Goguryeo fortresses in South Korea that have
been excavated so far, this study looked into the structure and
construction method of the fortifications around Mt. Acha. According to
the records, the Han River basin was occupied by Goguryeo for a long
time until the capital of Baekje was captured and pushed out by Silla, but
there was no material evidence until the fortress of Goguryeo was
confirmed in the Mt. Acha area. Therefore, after the 5th and 6th
centuries, when Baekje withdrew the capital from the Han River basin
and this area became the battleground of the three kingdoms, there was
a contradiction in the interpretation of historical sources on the issue of
territorialization of the Han River basin. However, as archaeological data
has been accumulated since the mid-1990s, a new perspective has
emerged to resolve this contradiction, and research results have
increased. In addition to the location conditions confirmed on the surface
of the many Goguryeo fortresses excavated and investigated, it became
possible to analyze the construction methods and structural singularities
of the fortress walls, internal facilities, and ancillary facilities in detail.
In addition to the fortresses around Mt. Acha, many Goguryeo
fortresses have been excavated in South Korea, and these can be divided
into four areas: Imjin River Basin, Yangju Basin, Mt. Acha Area, and
South of the Han River. Therefore, in order to understand the structure
of the fortress group in the Achasan area, it is necessary to compare and
analyze the remains of Goguryeo in other regions in addition to the
analysis of the relevant relics.
The fortress wall is largely divided into three parts, the foundation part
(the compacted layer on the base), the earthwork part, and the stone
building part. The fortress on the riverside of the Imjin River Basin is a
double-sided wall with stone walls built inside and outside, and the small
fortresses built at the top of the mountain are one-side of the fortress
wall that was built by rammed earth construction technic the back of the
wall. Both walls have a layer of resolution on the floor, and the flat
surface walls of the Imjin River Basin have a layer of resolution on a
rather thick base. In the case of a stone-built fortress wall, a wooden
pole was erected like the columns used for earthen ramparts, and stones
were stacked on it like a column, and the fortress wall serves as the
outer plate of the earthen ramparts frame. The earthwork part, which
forms the center of the fortress wall, was built and raised at the same
time as the stone building part. Outside the fortress wall, the
reinforcement wall reinforces the ground compaction layer and the
fortress wall. However, in the case of the fortress, except for the double
fortress wall of Hongryeonbong Fortress 1, there are no reinforcing
facilities other than the reinforcing soil at the base of the fortress wall.
In addition, the column of holes identified in the fortress wall line was
estimated to be a wooden fence facility in the stage before the
stone-built fortress wall at the beginning of the investigation, but it
seems to be somewhat different from the double wooden fence in the
area south of the Han River or the Imjin River Basin. The wooden fence
facility seems to be the early defense facility of Goguryeo advance, in
the case of a stone-built fortress wall and a time difference in the flat
fortress in the Imjin River basin, and in the case of a wooden fence on
south of the Han River. Unlike the case where a stone wall was built on
a wooden fence in the Imjin River Basin, the wooden fence south of the
Han River did not transition to the next stage. This is presumed to be
due to the fact that Goguryeo did not completely take control of the
area, but the distribution of the ruins is somewhat different considering
that it went south through the Han River to the Geum River area. The
wooden fence is characterized by a two-row wooden fence structure, and
the wooden fences of the inner and outer rows are paired with each
other, and are constructed like a plate frame of the Panchuktoseong
Fortress.
Many Chi are installed in small bastions, and most of them build the
fortress wall first and then build Chi in addition to it. Usually, Chi is
installed in the direction of the ridge of the top of the fortress, but in
the case of the main ridge facing another fortress, additional facilities are
installed outside of Chi, resulting in a Double Structure Chi. The exact
function or use of the double structure is unknown, but it is estimated
that it is a structure that satisfies both defense and access as it is
mainly installed in the direction of the main ridge. In addition, the exact
function or use of the detachable structure Chi installed away from the
fortress wall is not known because the Chi was installed by separating it
from the fortress wall. It seems that there was space between the
fortress walls even when the separated structure Chi was used, but
traces of excavation by artificially giving layers to the floor are also
confirmed. The facility can be estimated in two ways. It is presumed
that the space was created to serve as a transportation route around the
outside of the fortress, and when there was a need for full defense due
to the ridgeline or surrounding facilities.
In addition to the pillar holes found in the fortress wall, a double
column of pillar holes also rotates inside the fortress, which appears to
be the trace of wooden pillars that were created while constructing the
earthworks section to create an interior space. This is the type found in
most of the Goguryeo forts investigated so far, and three columns of
stilts, including the column holes in the fortress walls, can be identified.
Generally, the innermost row is small and shallow, and the main hole of
the fortress wall is the largest.
The building site was built with a stone wall or a building site with a
cross-wall structure that shares the walls of other building sites, and
most of the building sites are presumed to be strip footing buildings. An
underground building has also been identified at Hongryeonbong Fort 1,
but it is presumed to be a unique structure for the use of tiles for the
roof. In this form, it is difficult to infer the overlapping relationship
between building sites because the overlap of building sites is minimized.
However, some building sites show overlapping relationships with other
facilities. Also, some steps can be set depending on the shape of the
ondol. Small ondol with flat stone walls takes precedence over large
ondol facilities with walls made of rubble.
At least one water storage facility is required for each fortress. The
facility is a wooden box facility that first digs a square pit, uses thick
clay to waterproof it, and uses wood to finish it. However, if 2 to 4
units are built, there is a possibility that it is a wooden storage
warehouse for storage.
Other facilities include roads and access facilities. The road facilities
identified between the Hongryeonbong Fort 1 and 2 are connected to the
access facilities of the Hongryeonbong Fort 2 and the internal stairway
facilities. In addition, among the remains that have been specifically
identified for use, the mill and relics related to iron production are
identified, which is presumed to have been self-sufficient in the interior
of the fort.
As mentioned above, it seems that the reduction method of the
Goguryeo fortress from the Han River Basin to the Imjin River Basin was
constructed using a somewhat unified construction method. Although there
are slight differences depending on the time of formation and the
topography, it seems clear that they were created by the same forces
that entered the region in the 5th and 6th centuries. However, 'Bo-roo'
does not mean just a small fortress, but a generic name for facilities that
function in connection with each other and act like a large fortress, and
although it is a recently coined term, its meaning is very appropriate.
Also, as in the case of Hongryeonbong Fort No. 1, it is judged that
attempts to territorialize were continuously made, as tiled buildings that
can function as a 'Government office' are being constructed. However, it
seems that the power of Goguryeo was pushed to the north of the Imjin
River by the Silla-Baekje alliance, and it did not seem to advance its
role any further. However, just as Goguryeo continued to fight with
Baekje after occupying this area, it seems that Goguryeo continued to
fight with Silla even after losing this area. Although Goguryeo failed to
territorialize the Han River Basin, many materials of Goguryeo were left
in this area. Advanced technologies such as the construction method of
fortress walls and pottery making will spread and influence the
surrounding areas.
The castle walls and excavated relics of Goguryeo that have been
investigated in the Han River Basin so far are important results that
allow you to look at the aspect of Goguryeo at that time. So far, the
South Korean region has been a frontier in the study of Goguryeo, but
the accumulated data has been enriched both qualitatively and
quantitatively. Accordingly, in this paper, the structure of Goguryeo
fortresses from the Imjin River Basin to the Han River Basin was
examined closely and the construction methods were examined. Although
it means to gather the analyzed and organized data in one place for many
researchers along with the excavation results from various ruins, I think
that it can lead to active data acquisition in investigating or researching
the remains of Goguryeo in South Korea in the future. However, due to
the nature of the fortress wall, it is difficult to believe that the fortress
building forces in this area have completely taken over it. The reason is
that the government office does not have a large fortress or flat fortress
containing a valley that can be a base for a region, and only the fortress
stage, which has a strong temporary character, is confirmed.
