This study aims to analyze and compare the organizational development of new Korean religions that have utilized the “yeonwon system (淵源制yeonwon-je)” such as the Donghak (東學, Eastern Learning) / Cheondoism, Bocheonism, and Mugeuk-do (the Dao of the Boundlessness) based on their features during the modern period from the 1860s through the 1940s. Next, this study examines the characteristics and models of each religion through comparative research. Additionally, the study indicates that in the future, the academic spectrum can be broadened through comparative research on East Asian religions, including the principles of religious organizations or systems in Korea, China, and Japan, for instance, the yeonwon system. The reasons for considering the three religious traditions as the subject of research can be attributed to each religious order sharing the same organizational principle, the yeonwon system.
In the context of Korean traditions of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism, yeonwon (淵源, fountainhead) means “orthodox lineage (道統 literally Dao-System)”; namely, this indicates that these lineages were inherited from a master. When they later formalized into the yeonwon system, the concept was expanded from referring solely to orthodox lineages to further include the relationships formed while propagating the teachings (布敎). In this regard, propagating the teachings signifies “transmitting the Dao (傳道).” Accordingly, the system became an organizational principle that had defined the transmitter of the teaching (傳敎人) and the recipient of the teaching as the transmitter of the Dao (傳道者) and the recipient of the Dao (受道者). The transmitter and recipient of the teaching were defined as a permanent relationship between a master and disciple. Therefore, the yeonwon system can be explained as an organizational institution wherein a chain of connections between the masters and disciples forms a religious community, and this system connects all devotees to the yeonwon lineage, the orthodox lineage. The yeonwon system enables the transmitter of the teaching to become the yeonwon, and this signifies an individual who serves as the permanent master of the recipient of the teaching and will assume responsibility for the recipient’s religious life. In this regard, the yeonwon system is an organizational management system.
Suwun, Choe Je-u, the founder of Eastern Learning, designated the transmission of incantations that symbolize the Dao of the Supreme God (上帝) as the propagation of virtue (布德). This process was defined as the transmission of Dao (傳道). Accordingly, the concept of the yeonwon that emerged from the cultivation traditions of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism in Korea, later expanded to include the propagation of teachings. Consequently, an organizational principle was established whereby the transmitter of the teaching becomes the recipient’s yeonwon and serves as a connection to the orthodox lineage. Suwun performed a rite in the beginning that clarified the master–disciple relationship that was formed through propagation. In addition, he formed the yeonwon system by transforming the jeop (接, class) and jeopjang (接長, class heads) system used by village schools (書堂) wherein education followed the Confucian style. As the organization of Eastern Learning was formed through a Confucian master–disciple relationship with Suwun as the central figure, each jeop dissolved after his death. However, Haewol, Choi Si-Hyeong, reestablished the lineage of Suwun’s order in the late 1870s and became the cardinal focal point of yeonwon, the core of the organization. This united the organization. Through this process, Haewol retained the yeonwon system and transformed Eastern Learning, a Neo-Confucian school, into a new religious order. As the order expanded nationwide based on the yeonwon system in the 1890s, Haewol systemized the organization of Eastern Learning into the multi-layered jeop-po system (接包制, class and faction system) as daejeopju (大接主, faction host), suojeopju (首接主, vice faction host), jeopju (接主, class host), and jeopsa (接司, class administrator).
When Jeungsan, Kang Il-Sun, posited that he was an incarnation of the Supreme God whom Suwun encountered, he declared that his teachings were the “true Eastern Learning.” However, Jeungsan did not establish an organization via the yeonwon system. Jeungsan’s incantation became the core of the cultivation system in Jeungsan-inspired movements. Since a majority of his disciples were directly or indirectly influenced by Eastern Learning, the yeonwon system of Eastern Learning naturally became the organizational principle generally used by Jeungsan-inspired movements after his death.
Jeungsan’s disciple, Wolgok, Cha Gyeong-Seok, claimed that he was the successor to Jeungsan’s orthodox lineage and established the 60 bangju (方主, compass-segment leaders) and its subdivisions named the 6-im (任, duty), 12-im, 8-im, and 15-im, which were a numerical yeonwon system facilitated upon a degree number (度數) system based on the prophecy of Jeungsan. He then founded the religion, Bocheonism (普天敎). Wolgok’s yeonwon system rapidly expanded as it was prone to rebellious characteristics, for example, founding a new dynasty and striving for independence.
Another individual associated with Jeungsan was Jeongsan, Jo Cheol-Je, who, despite never having met Jeungsan in person, also claimed to be a successor in Jeungsan’s orthodox lineage via a revelation. Jeongsan established Mugeuk-do by enshrining Jeungsan as the Daoist deity, Nwehseong Bowha Cheonjon (雷聲普化天尊, Celestial Worthy of Universal Creation through His Thunderbolt). Jeongsan designated himself as the cardinal focal point of that yeonwon who received the heavenly mandate from Sangje (Supreme God), Jeungsan, and organizationally, he assumed the same status as Suwun within Eastern Learning. Accordingly, he differentiated himself from other disciples of Jeungsan. Jeongsan interpreted Jeungsanist thought via a Daoist perspective and organized his movement as a Daoist training association. The yeonwon system of his organization included yeonrak (聯絡, contact points), bubun (府分, branches), and podeok (布德, propagation sites), which provided the grounds to quickly develop the organization of Mugeuk-do based on strong master–disciple relationships characteristic of his movement’s Daoist style cultivation system.
After the death of Haewol (a leader within Eastern Learning), Uiam Sohn Byeong-Hui succeeded in the movement’s orthodox lineage. He changed the name of Eastern Learning to Cheondoism and promoted the legalization of the religious order through Western-style modernization. Accordingly, parochialism, a representative organizational institution common in Western religions, was adopted by Cheondoism and ran parallel to its yeonwon system. To create a compromise between these two systems, Uiam undermined the master–disciple relationship between the transmitter of the teaching and the recipient of the teaching, as understood in the original yeonwon system. In this context, the human lineage of the yeonwon system lost its status as an orthodox lineage in the traditional sense. The weakening of the yeonwon system accelerated and intensified since it was criticized for its hierarchical nature during the early 1920s. The order schismed and reunited many times, and a major issue was the abolishment of the yeonwon system that centered on the cardinal focal point of the yeonwon as its authoritative structure. With the weakening of the yeonwon system in the early 1920s, Cheondoism’s religious influence stagnated. The authorities in Cheondoism that had schismed previously in the 1930s ended up restoring most of its yeonwon system in order to overcome stagnation. They also resorted back to a system of parochialism in parallel with the yeonwon. Consequently, all authorities that had split from one another reunited.
Bocheonism and Mugeuk-do grew quickly during the 1920s. Both movements displayed strong centrifugal force based on their propensity for propagation, which was characterized by each organization's use of the yeonwon system. As these religious orders rose in prominence, the risk of schism increased owing to the yeonwon system. To counter this, Wolgok adopted parochialism and abolished the yeonwon system. However, the introduction of parochialism drove devotees to lose faith in the numerology associated with the previous yeonwon system. This led to Bocheonism’s religious influence waning. Once Wolgok realized this, he restored the numerical yeonwon system, reinforcing it through expansion. Subsequently, Wolgok transformed a politically rebellious faith system based on prophecies into an ethical cultivation system based on Confucianism. He thereafter abolished the yeonwon system to overcome the constant stagnation of his movement and avoid oppression from the Japanese imperial forces that had grown since the early 1930s. Following this, he adopted full-scale parochialism. However, the religious order failed to regain its former degree of influence. Therefore, Bocheonism was disbanded by the Japanese colonial government after the death of Wolgok, and its organization based on the yeonwon system was discontinued.
Mugeuk-do competed with Bocheonism and increased its scale; however, Jeongsan did not impose parochialism as Wolgok had. This is because the Yeonwon system of Mugeuk-do is strongly indicative of a Daoist cultivatory association that sacralizes the master–disciple relationship. The yeonwon system of Mugeuk-do, organized by Jeongsan, expeditiously restored its religious influence after Korea regained independence. Mugeuk-do was renamed Taegeuk-do, and this later schismed into Daesoon Jinrihoe. In the Daesoon Jinrihoe context, the yeonwon system developed into a more systematic and decentralized organization. Daesoon Jinrihoe has so far maintained a nationwide organization of its yeonwon system without the use of parochialist concepts.
Under the yeonwon system, the degree of religious authority of a religious order grows in proportion to the success of the order’s propagation. Additionally, all devotees can become clergy and preside over propagation and rituals. Accordingly, the motivation to engage in propagation and the centrifugal force of Daesoon Jinrihoe as a religious organization are strong. Simultaneously, the connection with the object of faith is mediated through a human lineage that originated from the cardinal focal point of the yeonwon. Therefore, the centripetal force in the yeonwon system is strong, and its authoritative structure is implicit. Although the system has many common features of other religious movements, Eastern Learning and Cheondoism started their yeonwon system based on Neo-Confucianism. In this context, the two orders share certain characteristics, as both are ideological associations. The strengths that enabled Bocheonism to gain popularity include its identity as a contingency of political rebels and the formation of a numerical organization of the yeonwon system based on Jeungsan’s prophecies. In contrast, Mugeuk-do was characterized as a religious cultivatory association that established its organization based on a Daoist-training version of the yeonwon system. Owing to the difference in terms of operating the organizational principle, each religious order presents distinct characteristics. Comparing this fact to the Buddhadharma Research Society, a new religious order of the period, such a tendency appears conspicuous. The Buddhadharma Research Society, a modern new religious organization that later became Won Buddhism, adopted an organizational principle based on a personal lineage, which was similar to the yeonwon system. It was called the “sip-in il-dan (十人一團, a group of ten people).” However, the sip-in il-dan did not form the organization of a yeonwon system. This resulted from the inheritance of a lineage of Buddhist orthodoxy and a training system that did not focus on the recitation of incantations. One of the reasons that the Buddhadharma Research Society was capable of forming an organization as a centralized parochialism through sacerdotalism stemmed from the fact that it adopted the yeonwon system with a weak bond wherein the propagator of the teaching should not be one’s master.
The degree of the yeonwon systems in Korean new religious orders can be expressed through a mathematical scale as follows: Won Buddhism ≦ Bocheonism in the 1930s ≨ neo-Cheodoism≨ traditional Cheondoism≦ Cheondoism ≨ the Eastern Learning & Bocheonism of the 1920s ≨ Mugeuk-do. If the yeonwon system is expressed through Swatos’ church–sect model, which conveys indicators of acceptance and rejection regarding a religion’s social environment, the typical characteristics of each religious order would relate to the degree to which it maintained fidelity to the yeonwon system. Therefore, it can be arranged as follows: a denomination or sect → an established sect → a dynamic or an entrenched sect.
In a broader sense, the yeonwon system is akin to the system of a new Japanese religion without a cultivatory system that focuses on the recitation of incantation wherein lineages are formed via propagation (導き系統制) or personal lineages in Chinese new religion. This phenomenon appears as modern new religions of East Asia that share the traditions of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism. However, the details are not identical. This suggests that the yeonwon system has developed unique characteristics in the historical circumstances of each country.
The yeonwon system is an intrinsic organizational system in the new Korean religions of modern times, which has been established on the grounds of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism. In addition, the historical development and characteristics of the new Korean religion vary in accordance with the context and intensity of the yeonwon system. This signifies that the yeonwon system is an important indicator for research on new Korean religions in modern times. In addition, this means that various facts that have been neglected so far or the similarities and differences among religions can be comprehensively understood by considering the phenomena of new religions in the modern era through a religious organizational principle called the yeonwon system. The yeonwon system can also be considered a significant indicator of the theoretical application of religious typology on Korean religions in modern times. Furthermore, the study confirms that the principle or system of religious organizations is useful for expanding the boundaries of religious research in comparative studies on the new religions of East Asia.
