This study attempts to examine the transformation of folding screens of gathering
(契屛), which were made to commemorate bureaucrats during the reign of King
Yeongjo (reigned 1724-1776), into a kind of royal court ceremony paintings. Folding
screens of gathering appeared with the diversification of lengthy type paintings of
gathering in the 17th century. In the early stage, they were simply made as a kind
of paintings of gathering according to the preferences of bureaucrats. The lengthy
types of paintings of gathering were diversified because of economic reasons and
functional strengths and weaknesses of different lengthy types. Although folding
screens required more expenses and supplies in comparison to scrolls and books,
they were preferred for multi-purpose uses in indoor and outdoor spaces. The large
screen of folding screens maximized the decorative function of folding screens of
gathering, which made it easy to show off the painting and name list. In addition,
based on the fact that many ceremonies of the royal court were made into various
paintings of gathering since King Sukjong (reigned 1674-1720), there is a possibility
that different lengthy types of paintings of gathering were preferred by each
government office.
The appearance of folding screens of gathering can be estimated from literature
records. Based on the birth and death of O Sang (1512-1573), the earliest time of
records containing the term folding screens of gathering, folding screens of
gathering were probably made prior to 1573. Also, the estimated time of appearance
is between the late 16th century and early 17th century, as colored folding screens
of gathering already became popular in the early 17th century. Sliding doors, which
comprised folding screens of names made by bureaucrats as a remembrance of
gatherings, were the preceding form of folding screens of gathering. Sliding doors,
one of the indoor architectural elements, were made at the same time as scrolls of
gathering before folding screens of gathering were made.
Since folding screens of gathering have the characteristics of paintings of
gathering that accommodate the characters of documentary paintings and
appreciation paintings, they simultaneously showed two types, the gathering scene
and appreciation paintings of strong appreciative character like landscape and figure
paintings. Folding screens of gathering in the 17th century were made into the
simple lengthy type by following the screen style of axial paintings of gathering.
Appreciative folding screens of gathering that used appreciation paintings as the
sole topic were made into single-section folding screens where the sections did not
form a connected painting. When painting gathering scenes, these folding screens
incl ded one section for a painting of gathering and other sections with appreciation
paintings or poetic writings and fore ords written by bureaucrats. Folding screens
of gathering that mixed the ceremony painting with appreciation paintings or
writings are known as eclectic folding screens of gathering. Previous studies
regarded such appreciative folding screens of gathering and eclectic folding screens
of gathering as changes according to time, but the two styles appeared and were
made together in the early 17th century. Eclectic folding screens showed the
decorative functions of folding screens of gathering similar to appreciative folding
screens of gathering, except that eclectic folding screens of gathering arranged
appreciation paintings in the inevitably remaining sections after illustrating the
gathering scene.
The reign of King Yeongjo was the time when appreciative folding screens of
gathering and eclectic folding screens of gathering from the 17th century were
continued, but various forms of folding screens of gathering were made with the
appearance of folding screens of gathering with multiple sections for the gathering
scene that only depicted the gathering scene. Folding screens of gathering with
multiple sections of the gathering scene had the royal court ceremony of the king
painted in three sections, and this style later settled down as a kind of royal court
ceremony painting. Placing a painting in multiple sections requires professional
skills with delicate adjustments in the lengthening process because the overall
connection of the sections needs to be kept in mind in the design stage. It can be
assumed that royal court painters participated in making folding screens of
gathering with multiple sections for the gathering scene.
The reason for the appearance of folding screens of gathering with multiple
sections for the gathering scene during the reign of King Yeongjo is related to
King Yeongjo’s attempt to strengthen his royal authority. King Yeonjo advocated
the theory of the lineage of three kings and filial piety as state theories in order to
strengthen his royal authority. King Yeongjo stressed the work of following and
succeeding the achievements of the late king according to these two logics, and
this was the reason why he revitalized various formalities that had been
discontinued by crises while emphasizing the inheritance and succession of previous
tasks during his reign. King Yeongjo also tried to prove his legitimacy by leaving
behind paintings of these ceremonies.
Since folding screens of gathering were made before King Yeongjo ascended to
the throne, he probably recognized the existence of folding screens of gathering
made by bureaucrats and their political value. Folding screens of gathering with
multiple sections for the gathering scene confirmed to be from the reign of King
Yeongjo were made under such political intention of King Yeongjo.
King Yeongjo reorganized the ceremonial system to further solidify his royal
authority and newly compiled law books, such as Sokdaejeon and Gukjosokoryeui.
When folding screens of gathering with multiple sections for the gathering scene
appeared in 1744, the compilation of these law books was in the finishing step. King
Yeongjo probably wanted to stipulate his ceremony in law books while creating a
specific style of folding screens of gathering. Folding screens of gathering with
multiple sections for the gathering scene made after this period can be regarded as
the preceding style of folding screens of royal court ceremony that appeared later.
The screen configuration of folding screens of gather with multiple sections for the
gathering scene originated from early royal court documentary paintings, such as
Jungmyojoseoyeongwansayeondo and Seochongdaechillimsayeondo. Early royal court
documentary paintings were organized during the reign of King Sukjong and were
led to folding screens of gathering with multiple sections for the gathering scene
during the reign of King Yeongjo, later becoming a kind of folding screens of royal
court ceremony. Whereas ceremony paintings found in eclectic folding screens of
gathering in the 17th century were painted in the style of paintings of government
office gatherings, folding screens of gathering with multiple sections for the
gathering scene from the reign of King Yeongjo succeeded the style of royal court
documentary paintings that were made in the early days of Joseon Dynasty.
Diverse changes in folding screens of gathering confirmed during the reign of
King Yeongjo are associated with the delivery of folding screens to the royal court.
Changes in the character of folding screens of gathering brought changes to the
production aspects and distribution methods. Originally, bureaucrats made folding
screens of gathering, and the expenses for making them were collected fromparticipating bureaucrats. Since early folding screens of gathering were only made
by some bureaucrats who participated in the events, they were probably made and
distributed based on the number of participants instead of being distributed
uniformly. However, it gradually became customary to use public money of
government offices to make folding screens of gathering, and government offices
began to make folding screens of gathering after ceremonies. With the reign of
King Yeongjo, folding screens of gathering transformed from private remembrances
of bureaucrats into royal court documentary paintings of the royal family, gaining
public functions. This transformation resulted in changes to the choice of topics for
appreciative and eclectic folding screens of gathering during the period of King
Yeongjo. Appreciation paintings were originally selected according to the painting
preferences of bureaucrats regardless of the ceremonies, but they started to become
conscious of the production background during the reign of King Yeongjo.
Since folding screens of gathering were intentionally introduced by the king frompaintings of gathering made by bureaucrats, folding screens of gathering as royal
court ceremony paintings are different from royal court documentary paintings found
in China. The biggest difference is that Chinese paintings expressed and stressed the
figure of the emperor, whereas royal court documentary paintings of Joseon did not
depict the figure of the king and only implied the king’s presence with
Ilwolobongbyeong, royal throne, or royal table. This difference can be seen as the
distinct characteristics of royal court documentary paintings of Joseon that adopted the
style of paintings of gathering by bureaucrats
