As the culture and art industry has recently attracted people’s attention as a high value-added industry, discussions on fostering future human resources in these business circles are continuing. This is because the cultural and artistic job market presents unstable employment security and income, unlike the growth of the industry. In this circumstance, 'entrepreneurship' is emerging as a novel alternative, but proper culture and art entrepreneurial education is not provided to college students. In this regard, this study attempted to examine the relationship between college students’ entrepreneurial interests and entrepreneurial intentions by targeting college students in culture and arts. At this time, individual entrepreneurial interests mean that it was created through various experiences such as start-ups, start-up clubs, crowdfunding and start-up contests, and parents' entrepreneurial interests mean that parents, who are founders, are interested in their children becoming entrepreneurs. For this, study questions were established as follows:
1. “What is the effect of college students' entrepreneurial interests and parents' entrepreneurial interests in their children becoming entrepreneurs on entrepreneurial intentions?”
2. “In the relationship between entrepreneurial interests and entrepreneurial intentions, do TPB components (attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control) have a mediating effect?”
3. “Does ESE (entrepreneurial self-efficacy) have a moderating effect in the relationship between entrepreneurial interests and entrepreneurial intentions?”
In the study question 1, this study examined whether entrepreneurial interest factors based on the direct and indirect experiences of college students in culture and arts have a substantial effect on entrepreneurial intentions, In the study question 2, this study analyzed whether such components of the theory of planned behavior (TPB) as entrepreneurial attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control have a mediating effect in the relationship between study subjects’ interest factors and entrepreneurial intentions. And in the study question 3, this study verified whether entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE) has a moderating effect or not. Most of preceding studies on the related areas used only one of quantitative and qualitative study methods, but this study attempted to understand the in-depth aspects of individual intentions and behaviors by using both methods. In other words, this study aimed to comprehensively examine all the related factors from the motivation for starting an entrepreneurial experience to even the results that lead to entrepreneurial intentions. In addition, in TPB or ESE, it is important to understand the meaning behind the subject's psychology, so interpretation through in-depth interviews seems to be useful. Specifically, in quantitative studies, objective evidence was secured by grasping the structural relationship between factors, and in qualitative studies, the subjective perception of the study subjects was explored to understand the path of entrepreneurial interests of students and parents.
First, based on Ajzen's (1991) planned behavior theory, the results of verifying the mediating effect of the TPB factors in the relationship between entrepreneurial interests and entrepreneurial intentions are as follows. In quantitative studies, entrepreneurial attitudes, perceived behavioral control and subjective norms were all found to have a significant effect on entrepreneurial intentions. However, the relationship among parents' entrepreneurial interests and entrepreneurial attitudes, students’ entrepreneurial interests and entrepreneurial intentions, and parents' entrepreneurial interests and entrepreneurial intentions was not significant. Therefore, it was confirmed that the effect of entrepreneurial interests of students and parents on the entrepreneurial intentions follows a complete mediating model, and the effect is expressed only through specific parameters. This result implies that in order to understand and predict entrepreneurial intentions, it is necessary to consider intensively how independent variables are related and how their effects are presented.
In qualitative studies, it was verified that those with a positive attitude and an active sense of challenge toward entrepreneurship have the experience of overcoming difficulties by themselves in the course of entrepreneurship. On the other hand, those who have experienced their parents' entrepreneurial experience did not get opportunities for self-reflection, self-confidence and so on because it was not their own experience, and it turned out that they felt vaguely about starting a business. Among them, there were many cases where they felt practical difficulties while experiencing their parents' entrepreneurship. In addition, while those who have their own entrepreneurial interests understand the start-ups in the field of culture and arts as management activities, parents' entrepreneurial interests in their children becoming entrepreneurs tend to be dismissed as part of cultural/artistic activities, thus making it difficult to have a significant effect on entrepreneurial intentions with indirect experience alone.
Subsequently, in qualitative studies, it was found that even in the relationship between parents' entrepreneurial interests and subjective norms, the influential relationship between the two factors could not be grasped only by the presence or absence of parents' entrepreneurial interests. This is because in relation to the case where parents succeed or fail to start a business, various factors such as the emotions of the respondents who grew up watching it must be considered. Therefore, it can be concluded that a significant influential relationship is formed only when certain parameters such as attitudes toward entrepreneurship, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control are positively influenced by direct and indirect entrepreneurial experiences.
Second, regarding the moderating effect of entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE) in the relationship between entrepreneurial interests and entrepreneurial intentions, the homogeneity of the model in which entrepreneurial self-efficacy was set as a control variable was not completely established in quantitative studies, so it was examined through qualitative studies. Results presented that when a student feels that his own entrepreneurial interests has had a positive effect on society and others, or feels that he has done it on his own, he feels a strong sense of self-efficacy. However, through parents' interest in their children becoming entrepreneurs, students did not feel much self-realization, and respondents were not well aware of their parents' start-ups, so there was no strong relationship.
In addition, college students in culture and arts arbitrarily chose their major, and they agonized over starting a business due to concerns about income and working conditions in the related job market after graduation. Since these concerns apply to both fine and popular art groups, it is interpreted that there is no significant difference between the two groups. Although the culture and art job market is creating anxiety, cultural and artistic entrepreneurial education is not properly conducted in reality. Most of the subjects of this study longed for culture and art entrepreneurial education, and through this study, they even expressed their intention to challenge entrepreneurship, so education that meets the demand in the educational field should be provided quickly.
This study has the following academic implications. First, using a mixed study method, the influential relationship of various factors was verified in-depth, and the horizon of research was expanded through handling such rare research subjects as college students in culture and arts with their own entrepreneurial interests or parents' entrepreneurial interests. Second, recognizing the importance of external (environmental) factors such as parents' entrepreneurial interests in addition to their own entrepreneurial interests, which is a personal factor, the direct and indirect influential relationship of entrepreneurial interests was analyzed. Third, the TPB factors were applied to entrepreneurship to highlight ways to promote entrepreneurial intention, and the role and importance of the factors were verified from a comprehensive perspective. Fourth, as a result of examining the moderating effect of ESE, it was found that it was more effective in students' own entrepreneurial interests than parents' entrepreneurial interests in their children becoming entrepreneurs, and it was also explored that the job market in the field of culture and arts was unstable regardless of the detailed major.
The practical implications of study findings are as follows. First, it is expected that study findings can be used as basic data for practical measures to revitalize cultural and artistic entrepreneurship, and an efficient education system can be established by selecting major factors such as TPB factors. Second, college students in culture and arts with their parents' entrepreneurial interests showed a realistic and stability-oriented tendency, but those with their own entrepreneurial interests showed an enterprising and challenging tendency. Therefore, when conducting entrepreneurial education in the future, customized education should be conducted in consideration of these tendencies. Third, study subjects hope to be provided entrepreneurial education specialized in culture and arts, but they have not experienced related education on campus and outside, so new education should be introduced. This is because it will be possible to broaden the choice of career paths and achieve the continuous growth of the culture and art industry as well.
