학교는 가르치고 배우는 곳으로 교수와 학습을 통하여 교사와 학생간에 상호작용이 이루어지는 곳이다. 학급에서 교사는 교육의 핵심적 존재이며 특히 학령기 아동에게 있어서 교사는 중요한 타인으로서 인식된다. 따라서 학생들이 교사의 행동을 어떻게 지각하고, 해석하며, 수용하느냐에 따라 학생의 발달에 지대한 영향을 미친다.
본 연구는 학교 교실 안에서 이루어지는 교사와 학생간의 상호작용과 관련이 있는 교사기대이론을 전제로 하여 아동들이 교사의 행동을 어떻게 지각하는지 알아보고 나아가 이러한 각 학생에 대한 교사의 행동 그리고 그에 대한 지각이 학생의 정서적 영역과 인지적 영역 즉, 아동의 자아존중감 및 학업성취와 어떠한 관계를 맺는지 알아보고자 하였다.
이러한 연구 목적을 바탕으로 하여 다음과 같은 연구문제를 설정하였다.
첫째, 교사의 행동에 대한 학생의 지각은 학생의 배경 요인인 성별, 학년, 지역에 따라 어떤 차이를 가지는가?
둘째, 학생들은 교사의 행동의 차이를 유발하는 요인으로 무엇을 지각하고 있는가?
셋째, 학생이 지각한 교사의 행동은 학생의 자아존중감과 어떤 관계가 있는가?
넷째, 학생이 지각한 교사의 행동은 학생의 학업성취와 어떤 관계가 있는가?
연구문제를 해결하기 위하여 춘천시, 원주시, 양구군, 화천군에 소재하는 초등학교 6개교 4·6학년 573명을 임의표집하였다.
본 연구에서 다루는 주요 변인은 교사 행동에 대한 학생의 지각과 자아존중감, 학업성취이다. 이들 변인들을 측정하기 위하여 교사 기대 행동에 대한 학생의 지각, 자아존중감에 관한 질문지 조사를 하였다. 교사의 행동은 지원적 행동, 부정적 피드백, 학습활동(질의/응답 상황), 교사의 기대적인 행동을 의미한다. 자아존중감은 일반적 자아존중감, 사회적 자아존중감, 학교(학업) 자아존중감으로 구성된다. 질문문항은 5단계 평정척도로 구성되었다. 학업성취는 2003학년도 1학기말 국어, 수학, 사회, 과학 점수를 이용하였다.
자료는 SPSS프로그램을 이용하여 처리되었다. 구체적 통계방법으로는 성별, 학년, 지역에 따라 학생들이 지각하는 교사의 행동이 차이가 나는지를 알기 위해서는 변량분석을 사용하였다. 학생들이 지각하는 교사 행동의 차이를 유발하는 요인을 학년별, 성별, 지역별로 다르게 지각하고 있는지를 알기 위해서는 교차분석(χ^(2))을 사용하였다. 그리고 학생들이 지각하는 교사 행동이 학생들의 자아존중감 및 학업성적과 가지는 상관성 및 영향력을 살펴보기 위해 상관관계, 중다회귀분석을 사용하였다.
본 연구에서 얻은 결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 교사 행동에 대한 지각은 성별(F=19.26, p=.000), 학년(F=14.98, p=.000), 지역(F=5.24, p=.022)별로 차이를 보이고 있는데 남학생보다는 여학생이, 6학년보다는 4학년이, 읍 면지역 학생보다는 시지역의 학생들이 교사 행동을 높게 지각하고 있었다.
교사의 지원적 행동에 대한 학생들의 지각 정도는 학년(F=14.40, p=.000)에 따라서만 통계적으로 유의한 차가 났다. 6학년이 22.01점, 4학년이 24.00점으로 4학년이 6학년에 비하여 교사의 지원적 행동에 대하여 높게 지각하고 있었다.
교사의 부정적 피드백에 대한 학생의 지각 정도는 성별(F=59.67, p=.000)과 지역(F=17.85, p=.000)에 따라 통계적으로 유의한 차가 나타났다. 성별로는 여학생(17.49점)이, 남학생(15.52점)보다 교사의 부정적 피드백에 대해 더 높게 지각하고 있는 것으로 나타났으며, 지역별로는 시지역(16.98점)이, 읍·면지역(15.91점)보다 교사의 부정적 피드백을 더 높게 지각하고 있었다.
교사의 학습활동(질의/응답) 상황에 대한 학생의 지각 정도는 성별(F=26.44, p=.000)과 학년(F=31.92, p=.000)에서 통계적으로 유의한 차가 나타났다. 성별로는 여학생(30.98점)이 남학생(29.06점)보다 교사의 학습활동(질의/응답)상황에 대하여 높게 지각하고 있는 것으로 나타났으며, 학년별로는 4학년(30.94점)이 6학년(28.92점)보다 교사의 학습활동(질의/응답)상황에 대하여 높게 지각하고 있었다.
교사의 기대적 행동에 대한 학생의 지각 정도는 성별(F=4.71, p=.030)과 지역(F=4.54, p=.034)에 따라 통계적으로 유의한 차가 나타났다. 성별로는 남학생(26.31점)보다 여학생(27.20점)이 교사의 기대적 행동에 대하여 높게 지각하고 있었으며, 지역별로는 시지역(27.12점)이 읍·면지역(26.32점)보다 교사의 기대적 행동에 대하여 높게 지각하고 있었다.
둘째, 교사 행동의 차이를 유발하는 요인에 대한 학생의 지각에서는 생활태도라고 인식한 학생들이 가장 많고, 그 다음으로 학업성적, 지능, 학급임원 여부, 경제적 배경의 순으로 나타났다.
그리고 이러한 결과는 학년별로 유의한 차이를 보이고 있었다(χ^(2)=18.81, p=.001). 즉 6학년 학생들이 4학년 학생들에 비해 학생들마다 서로 다르게 행동하는 교사행동의 요인으로 '생활태도'와 '학업성적'이라고 인식하는 경향이 비교적 강하게 나타남을 알 수 있었다.
셋째, 교사행동에 대한 학생지각과 자아존중감과는 정적 상관을 보였다(r=.44, p<.000). 특히 교사의 기대적인 행동에 대한 지각(r=.44, p<.05)이 자아존중감과 가장 높은 상관을 보였고 다음으로 높은 상관을 보인 것이 부정적 피드백에 대한 학생의 지각이었다(r=.33, p<.000).
교사 행동에 대한 학생의 지각이 자아존중감에 미치는 영향을 알아본 결과 정적인 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 교사의 부정적 피드백은 β=.14(t=5.62, p=.000), 기대적인 행동에 대한 학생 지각은 β=.37(t=7.37, p=.000)로 정적인 영향을 주는 것으로 나타나 자아존중감 발달에 큰 영향을 미치는 것을 알 수 있다. 즉, 부정적 피드백을 낮게 지각하고 기대적인 행동에 대한 학생의 지각이 높을수록 자아존중감이 높아짐을 알 수 있었다.
넷째, 교사 행동에 대한 학생들의 지각과 학업성취는 (r=.14, p<.05)정적 상관을 보였다(r=.24, p<.000). 교사 행동 중 부정적 피드백에 대한 학생의 지각(r=.24, p<.05)이 학업성취와 가장 높은 상관을 보였고 다음으로 기대적 행동에 대한 학생의 지각(r=.20, p<.000)이 통계적으로 유의한 상관을 보였다.
교사 행동에 대한 학생의 지각이 학업성취에 미치는 영향을 살펴보면 교사행동에 대한 아동지각은 β=.14(t=3.23, p=.001)로 나타나 학업성취에 정적인 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 좀 더 구체적으로 교사행동의 하위영역에 대한 지각이 학업성취에 미치는 영향력을 살펴본 결과 학업성취에 가장 큰 영향을 주는 것은 교사의 기대적인 행동에 대한 학생의 지각이었으며(β=.29, t=5.33, p=.000), 다음으로 교사의 부정적 피드백에 대한 학생의 지각임을 알 수 있었다(β=.19, t=4.28, p=.000).
이상의 결과를 종합해 보면 초등학생들의 자아존중감과 학업성취 수준은 교사 행동에 대한 학생의 지각 정도가 중요한 요인으로 작용하고 있으며 교사 행동에 대한 학생의 지각 정도가 높을수록 자아존중감과 학업성취에 정적 영향을 줌을 알 수 있다.
또한 아동의 인적 배경요인에 따라 교사 행동에 대한 지각 정도가 다르게 나타난 것으로 보아 자아존중감과 학업성취 향상을 위해 학생 개인의 특성차에 따른 개별적인 교사의 지도가 요청된다. 학교 생활에서 교사와 적절하고 만족스러운 인간관계를 가진 학생은 다른 모든 학교 영역에서 보다 만족할 수 있다. 따라서 교사는 모든 아동들에 대하여 관심을 보이고, 아동들의 인격을 존중해 주어야 할 것이다 또한 아동의 특성에 따라 역할을 부여하고 그들을 수용해 주며 긍정적으로 평가하고 아동들의 의견을 인정하고 반영해 주도록 노력해야 할 것이다.
The school is a place where teachers and students interact with each other through teaching and learning. In the class, teachers play the key role of education, and particularly they are perceived as important persons by children at school age. Accordingly, how students perceive, interpret and receive teachers' behaviors have a great influence on their development.
The present study purposed to examine how children perceive teachers' behaviors based on the theory of teacher expectation (교사기대이론) related to interaction between teachers and students in the school class, and to understand the relationship of teachers' behaviors and students' perception on the behaviors with the students' affective domain and cognitive domain, namely, their self-esteem and academic achievement.
For these purposes, this study formulated the following research questions.
First, how different is students' perception on teachers' behavior according to students' background factors, which are gender, school year and place of residence.
Second, what factors do students perceive as the causes of difference in teachers' behaviors?
Third, in what relationship are teachers' behaviors perceived by students with students' self-esteem?
Fourth, in what relationship are teachers' behaviors perceived by students with students' academic achievement?
To answer these questions, the researcher selected 573 students through random sampling from fourth- and sixth-year students at six elementary schools in Chuncheon-si, Wonju-si, Yanggu-gun and Hwacheon-gun.
Key variables handled in this study were students' perception on teachers' behaviors and students' self-esteem and academic achievement. To measure these variables, this study conducted a questionnaire survey on students' perception of teachers' expected behaviors and students' self-esteem. Teachers' behaviors mean supportive behavior, negative feedback, teaching activity (question & answer situation), and teachers' expectative behavior. self-esteem is sub-divided into general self-esteem, social self-esteem and school (academic) self-esteem. Survey questions were on a scale of 5 points. Academic achievement was evaluated based on the scores of Korean, Mathematics, Social Study and Science in the first semester of the 2003 school year.
Data were processed using SPSS. As for specific statistic methods, Variate analysis was used to determine whether students' perception on teachers' behaviors is different according to students' gender, school year and place of residence. Cross analysis (χ^(2)) was used to determine whether students perceive factors that cause difference in teachers' behaviors differently according to school year, gender and place of residence. In addition, correlation and multiple regression analysis were used to examine the relationship of teachers' behaviors perceived by students with students' self-esteem and academic achievement.
The results of this study are as follows.
First, students' perception on teachers' behaviors was different according to gender (F=19.26, p=.000), school year (F=14.98, p=.000) and place of residence (F=5.24, p=.022). Female students appreciated teachers' behaviors more highly than male ones did, fourth-year students than sixth-year ones, and students in towns and villages than those in cities.
Difference in the degree of students' perception of teachers' supportive behaviors was statistically significant only according to school year (F=14.40, p=.000). The degree was 22.01 points for sixth-year students and 24.00 points for fourth-year ones. Thus, fourth-year students perceived teachers' supportive behaviors more than sixth-year ones did.
Difference in the degree of students' perception of teachers' negative feedback was statistically significant according to gender (F=59.67, p=.000) and place of residence (F=17.85, p=.000). By gender female students (17.49 points) perceived teachers' negative feedback more than male ones (15.52 points) did, and by the place of resident students in cities (16.98 points) more than those in towns and villages (15.91 points).
Difference in the degree of students' perception of teachers' teaching activity (question and answer) was statistically significant according to gender (F=26.44, p=.000) and school year (F=31.92, p=.000). By gender female students (30.98 points) perceived teachers' teaching activity (question and answer) more than male ones (29.06 points) did, and by school year fourth-year students (30.94 points) more than sixth-year students (28.92 points).
Difference in the degree of students' perception of teachers' expectative behaviors was statistically significant according to gender (F=4.71, p=.030) and place of residence (F=4.54, p=.034). By gender female students (27.20 points) perceived teachers' expectative behaviors more than male ones (26.31 points) did, and by place of residence students in cities (27.12 points) more than those in towns and villages (26.32 points).
Second, as for students' perception on factors that cause difference in teachers' behaviors, the largest number of students perceived that the most important factor is life attitude, and next school record, intelligence, being a member of the class board, economic background, etc. In addition, the result was significantly different according to school year (χ^(2)=18.81, p=.001). That is, compared to fourth-year students, sixth-year students perceived more strongly that the factors influencing teachers' behaviors differently toward individual students are 'life attitude' and 'school record.'
Third, there was a positive correlation between students' perception on teachers' behaviors and students' self-esteem (r=.44, p<.000). In particular, students' perception of teachers' expectative behaviors (r=.44, p<.05) was most closely correlated with students' self-esteem, and next students' perception of teachers' negative feedback (r=.33, p<.000).
Students' perception on teachers' behaviors appeared to have a positive influence on students' self-esteem. Teachers' negative feedback had a positive influence at a degree of β=.14 (t=5.62, p=.000), and students' perception on teachers' expectative behaviors at a degree of β=.37(t=7.37, p=.000). This shows that low perception of negative feedback and high perception of expectative behaviors heighten students' self-esteem.
Fourth, there was a positive correlation between students' perception on teachers' behaviors and students' academic achievement (r=.14, p<.05). In particular, students' perception of teachers' negative feedback (r=.24, p<.05) was most closely correlated with students' academic achievement, and next students' perception of teachers' expectative behaviors (r=.20, p<.000) was in a statistically significant correlation with students' academic achievement.
As for the influence of students' perception on teachers' behaviors on students' academic achievement, students' perception on teachers' behaviors appeared to have a positive influence on students' academic achievement at a degree of β=.14(t=3.23, p=.001). Specifically, students' perception of teachers' expectative behaviors has the greatest influence on students' academic achievement (β=.29, t=5.33, p=.000), and next students' perception of teachers' negative feedback (β=.19, t=4.28, p=.000).
Putting these results together, elementary school students' perception on teachers' behaviors works as an important factor on their self-esteem and academic achievement. The higher students perceive teachers' behaviors the stronger positive influence the perception has on students' self-esteem and academic achievement.
In addition, this study showed that students' perception on teachers' behaviors is different according to students' background factors. Thus, to improve students' self-esteem and academic achievement, it is necessary to give individual guidance to each student according to the student's personal characteristics. Students who are in a proper and desirable relationship with teachers at school may be satisfied with all the rest areas of school life. Therefore, teachers must take interest in all children and respect their personality. Furthermore, it is necessary to assign proper roles to children according to their characteristics, accept them and appreciate them positively, and make efforts to acknowledge and consider their opinions.
