두 렌즈는 모두 8 curve의 Polycarbonate(n=1.59) 재질로, SOMO Optical(Korea)에서 제작하였다.
Purpose: To evaluate clinical performance of test lenses(in which astigmatic aberration was corrected) and control lenses(in which no correction is made) used in sports sunglasses designed to correct myopia.
Methods: 55 adults with refractive errors between -0.50D ~ -5.00D(spherical equivalent) were selected and fitted with sports sunglasses with control lenses or test lenses. Distance visual acuity under high(90%) and low(10%) contrast, dynamic visual acuity, stereopsis, and heterophoria were measured 10 and 60 minutes after wear each lens. Subjective questionnaires assessing vision distortion and lens satisfaction were obtained for both lenses. Both lenses were made of polycarbonate(n=1.59) with 8 curve and produced by SOMO Optical(Korea). Test lenses were designed using the Thin-Tech program(Thin-Tech Lens Technologies, USA). The frame was SWANS WARRIOR 6(Yamamoto Kogaku, Japan).
Results: There was no significant difference in static visual acuity between control and test lenses in monocular and binocular vision with low(10%) and high(90%) contrast(measured at 10 minutes and 60 minutes after wear). Although the dynamic visual acuity increased significantly over time with both lenses, there was no significant difference between them. In the low myopia group(≤-2.00D), however, the test lenses achieved significantly better dynamic visual acuity than control lenses. Subjective symptoms were evaluated into two groups: one with subjects who wore test lenses in which astigmatic aberration was corrected and the other with subjects who wore control lenses in which no correction is made. For the test lenses group, clearness, comfort and satisfaction were significantly greater at 60 minutes than at 10 minutes. Comparison between these two lenses based on clearness, comfort and satisfaction at the same time points(at 10 minutes and 60 minutes after wear) found that wearers felt the images are sharper, more comfortable and more satisfying with test lenses than the control ones. Correlation analysis of the refractive errors and the questionnaire scores found that there was significant correlation between the two in test lenses at both 10 minutes and 60 minutes after wear; such correlation was not found in control lenses.
Conclusions: In the low myopia group(≤-2.00D), test lenses achieved better dynamic visual acuity than control lenses. There was no significant difference in distance visual acuity, stereopsis and distance phoria. Test lenses were superior to control lenses in subjective satisfaction. Sports sunglasses with corrected astigmatic aberration have a relatively good level of satisfaction when used in those patients with myopia under spherical equivalent -5.00D. It is believed that those with the low myopia(≤-2.00D) will achieve a greater benefit from their lens with corrected astigmatic aberration.
