In the multi-media era, OTT is becoming a new media consumption channel. Due to the strengthening of competition in the OTT market, the OTT platform is striving to provide differentiated content, such as jumping into the production and distribution of video content directly. In addition, various promotions and combined discounts are lowering barriers to entry for consumers. For this reason, consumers may also subscribe to one or more OTTs. In this study, it was named 'multiple subscription'.
The use of the OTT platform is generally a subscription-type service and is characterized by a transaction format in which consumers regularly pay for the right to use digital content, which is an intangible good. In addition, among OTT consumers, multiple subscription consumers are typical heavy users who will lead the OTT market in the future. Therefore, this study attempted to explore the structural characteristics of the OTT decision-making process and the factors influencing the decision-making of multiple subscription consumers. Through this, we tried to understand the decision-making process of consumers with multiple OTT subscriptions and to derive academic and practical implications by normalizing it into a new theory.
In order to achieve the purpose of this study, the research question 'How is the decision-making process of consumers with multiple OTT subscriptions?' was set. In order to find out the research problem, in-depth interviews were conducted with 20 adult men and women who subscribed to two or more OTTs. In-depth interviews were conducted for about two months from May to July 2022. The contents of the study were recorded with the consent of the study participants, and after the interview was completed, they were transcribed and used for analysis. This study focuses on understanding the 'decision-making process of consumers with multiple OTT subscriptions', and analyzed the collected data by adopting grounded theory as a methodology among qualitative approaches.
In this study, the research results were derived through the process of open coding, axial coding, and selective coding according to the framework of the grounded theory (Glaser & Strauss, 1967; Truss & Corbin, 1990;1998). First, a total of 96 concepts, subcategories, and 30 categories were derived by categorizing concepts with high relevance in meaning through open coding. In the axial coding process, the paradigm model was used as a theoretical framework to derive causal conditions, interventional conditions, contextual conditions, action-interaction strategies, and results along with the central phenomenon 'Optory operation with appropriate increase or decrease of platform'. In addition, the 'OTT multiple subscription butterfly model' was finally schematized through the selection coding process of integrating the previous results around the core category and normalizing them into a new theory.
This study schematically illustrates the factors influencing the decision to subscribe to OTT through the ‘OTT multiple subscription butterfly model’ and the process of the resulting results. In particular, the necessity of subscription, which is divided into four categories: discriminatory content, social relationship, OTT brand characteristics, and idle time resolution, and subscription activities converge into subscription behavior, and subscription is again influenced by content such as cancellation and maintenance. Furthermore, the process of multiple subscription consumers operating their OTT repertoire through the OTT multiple subscription butterfly model is like repeatedly performed like a butterfly's wings. Based on the OTT multiple subscription butterfly model, the main results were presented as follows.
First, as a result of exploring the decision-making process of consumers with multiple OTT subscriptions, consumers recognize the need for OTT due to content, platform, social motivation, and contextual factors. After that, OTT subscriptions will be decided by comprehensively considering payment methods such as discounts, free experiences, and the possibility of ID sharing. In addition, it was confirmed that the presence or absence of continuous use was determined in consideration of content, system, and economy during the OTT use process. For consumers of multiple OTT subscriptions, OTT is used as a content consumption window and sometimes plays a role in replacing TV and movie theaters. In addition, it acted as a way to ethical consumption of content and replaced illegal content, and consumers also showed psychological satisfaction due to multiple subscriptions. In addition, it was confirmed that the characteristics of the OTT decision-making process are that the process from problem recognition to information search and alternative evaluation takes place simultaneously, and that there is a "delay in termination" caused by the burden of ID sharing relationship and hesitation in termination.
Second, content is the most important factor in the OTT decision-making process in all directions. Consumers who have a desire to watch specific content or recognize the characteristics of the content area of the OTT platform lead to subscription. In addition, content was found to have the greatest influence on decision-making on the maintenance and termination of the platform being satisfied or subscribed during use. At this time, the meaning of 'content' identified in this study does not simply mean specific content, but is an approach that encompasses the amount and quality of content. Due to the characteristics of multiple subscriptions, multiple subscription consumers considered termination when they considered that the combination of the platform they are subscribing to was not complementary but overlapping. However, when there was a belief that the platform being subscribed or scheduled to be subscribed would supply enough attractive content in the future, the OTT subscription decision was made, and the decision-making process of adding a new platform began when it recognized the content area not currently subscribed to the platform. In the end, it was confirmed that comprehensively considering the genre, quantity, and quality of the content rather than the importance of each individual content is an important factor in OTT subscription decision-making.
Finally, OTT multiple subscription consumers operate their own OTT repertory and lead a video content consumption life. It can be seen that they maintain, repair, and modify their OTT subscription list for the optimal platform combination that suits their preferences and situations. The reason why consumers pay for multiple platforms at the same time even under a single product category called "OTT" is that each platform is considered a "different goods." Therefore, they do not switch the OTT platform, but add it because the OTT they are already subscribed to is not inferior, but because they have experienced an exclusive content area in other OTT. Therefore, this process can be attributed to consumers making decisions that fill their needs through different content areas of each platform.
Through this, the following suggestions were made. First, it is necessary to understand and approach the characteristics of consumers' OTT decision-making processes. In particular, this study confirmed that even though OTT is a transaction form that pays a certain amount every month, consumers go through a relatively abbreviated process and respond strongly to key attractive factors. Therefore, it was considered necessary to provide integrated and visible platform benefits and payment methods to assist these consumers in the decision-making process.
Second, it is necessary to consider the 'delay in termination' that occurs in the process of operating the OTT repertory of consumers with multiple OTT subscriptions. Delay in termination is, after all, an economic waste in terms of consumer welfare. Therefore, if consumers can easily terminate when they wish to terminate, it will have a positive effect in terms of the efficiency of consumers' OTT repertory operation.
Third, it is necessary to overhaul the price policy of OTT subscriptions. Currently, the OTT platform's usage rights structure requires only one line, but an expensive usage rights providing four lines must be subscribed to use high-definition images. Moreover, in the current situation where single-person households account for a significant proportion of multiple subscription consumers, it is necessary to consider reorganizing the rate system to expand consumers' options.
Fourth, content is an important factor for OTT consumers. The content at this time not only encompasses the amount and quality of content currently owned by the platform you subscribe to, but also includes the amount and quality of exclusive and self-produced content. In addition, the topic and fun of the current content are also important, but the belief that such content will continue in the future is also important. Therefore, the OTT industry should strive to give consumers this belief in the future, and activeommunication efforts are needed to reflect the needs of consumers.
Finally, academic and industrial discussions on ID sharing are needed. As a result of the study, ID sharing was accepted by consumers as a universal and valid strategy. In particular, in the case of ID sharing, it seems that it can be subdivided into the degree of payment and the relationship of the sharing object, so follow-up research is needed. In addition, unlike the current situation in which ID sharing is common, there is a lack of accurate guidelines or visible guidance on this, so industrial discussion on this is also needed.
This study explored the decision-making process focusing on OTT multiple subscription consumers and attempted to theorize it as the 'OTT multiple subscription butterfly model'. Furthermore, it can be expected that the conclusions and suggestions drawn will help promote the welfare of OTT consumers and develop the OTT industry.
