The purposes of this study were twofold, i.e., 1) to compare diet habit, exercise habit, daily energy intake, and body composition among Korean dancers, ballet dancers, modern dancers, and general individuals and 2) to investigate the effects of the aforementioned variables on dietetic disorder, menstruation disorder, bone mineral density (BMD), and blood variables. One hundred and twenty subjects including 30 Korean dancers, 30 ballet dancers, 30 modern dancers, and 30 general students attending University volunteered to participate in the study as subjects. Diet habit, exercise habit, daily energy intake, dietetic disorder, and menstruation disorder of all subjects were measured utilizing corresponding questionnaires. Body composition and BMD were measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis and DEXA, respectively. Calcitonin, estradiol, and blood calcium were measured as blood variables regarding body composition, menstruation, and BMD. One-way ANOVA was utilized to compare parametric variables and chi-square test was utilized to compare nonparametric variables among Korean dancers, ballet dancers, modern dancers, and general individuals. Main results obtained in the present study were as follows: 1) Regarding diet habit, ballet dancers showed the highest response to external diet behavior, whereas modern dancers showed the highest response to restrained diet behavior. 2) Regarding exercise habit, total amount of exercise in ballet dancers was the highest. 3) Percent body fat was 15.28% in Korean dancers, 12.17% in ballet dancers, 18.10% in modern dancers, and 25.84% in general individuals. There were significant differences in percent body fat among four groups. 4) Daily energy intake was 1,459.75 kcal in Korean dancers, 1,013.91 kcal in ballet dancers, 1,271.65 kcal in modern dancers, and, 1,488.85 kcal in general individuals. There were significant differences in daily energy intake among four groups. 5) There was no significant difference among four groups in menarche. 6) No significant difference was shown among four groups in menstruation disorder-related variables. Oligomenorrhea was the highest in all groups. 7) Ballet dancers showed the highest incidence of anorexia nervosa, whereas modern dancers showed the highest incidence of bulimia nervosa. 8) BMD was the highest in modern dancers, whereas it was the lowest in Korean dancers. There were significant differences in BMD among four groups. 9) There was no significant difference in calcitonin, estradiol, and blood calcium among four groups. 10) There were significant correlations between percent body fat and total exercise amount and between percent body fat and bulimia nervosa in Korean dancers. There were significant correlations between percent body fat and dietetic disorder, between exercise habit and menarche, between exercise habit and dietetic disorder, and between diet habit and dietetic disorder in ballet dancers. There were significant correlation between diet habit and exercise habit in modern dancers. There were significant correlations between percent body fat and dietetic disorder and between exercise habit and dietetic disorder in general individuals. 11) There were significant correlations between body weight and calcitonin, between calcitonin and blood calcium, and between BMD and calcitonin in Korean dancers. There were significant correlation between diet habit and blood calcium in ballet dancers. There were significant correlations between diet habit and BMD and between diet habit and blood calcium in modern dancers. There were significant correlations between diet habit and BMD and between diet habit and estradiol in general individuals. 12) There were significant correlation between dietetic disorder and BMD in Korean dancers. There were significant correlation between menarche and blood calcium in ballet dancers. There were significant correlations between menarche and blood calcium and between dietetic disorder and blood calcium in general individuals. Accordingly, it would be concluded that extreme diet and excessive exercise give rise to decreased percent body fat, dietetic disorder, and menstruation disorder, resulting in deficiency of nutrients and decreased BMD in dancers. Therefore, scientific and integrative health program focusing on proper management of nutrition and body weight should be established for dancers. Lastly, decreased BMD does not seem to be directly related to the changes of hormones known as BMD-related. It can be explained by, in part, the subjects were all young and healthy. Research including dancers with more variable range of age and examining the mechanisms for the relations among the aforementioned independent variables would be warranted.
