한국 최초 방문 선교사 칼 귀츨라프(Karl F. Gutzlaff)의 선교 사상과 조선 선교 연구 = A Study of the First Visit Missionary in Korea, Karl F. Gutzlaff’s Mission Thought and the Chosun Mission

This study features the mission of Karl F. Gutzlaff, who was one of the first missionaries arrived in Chosun. Although it was a short visit, he devoted himself to cultivate the gospel of Christ into Chosun, a hermitage and hermit country of the gospel, and to establish the kingdom of God. Especially, he was a missionary who loved the culture and history of Chosun even when Chosun was regarded as an undeveloped country. He also truly loved the Chosun people. Although he left after a month and invested in only limited areas in Chosun, his commitment as an evangelist and translations of God’s words that he handed out set up a fundmanetal in which Christianity could grow on in Korea. In addition, his contribution as a pioneer enabled other Western missionaries to start their mission in Korea.
The mission of Gutzlaff can be summarized in three ways. The first was a caring missionary with the poor. He is a person who does not miss the missionary efforts to improve the quality of life of the poor and to eradicate disease. The second was the pioneer of translation mission through documents. His excellent language skills not only helped local people read the Bible in their native language, but also provided a touch point for the gospel to communicate more easily. Third, it was the pioneer of indigenous mission. Although he was a Western missionary, he abandoned western mission. He tried to find a point of contact with evangelical evidence through thoroughly integrated localized missionary methods, and devoted himself to improve and enhance the quality of life of local people.
