과학, 종교, 그리고 유용성 — 중국 근대 초기 회색문헌을 통해 본 의료선교와 전문가의 형성 과정 = Science, Religion, and Utility: The Formation of Medical Missionaries and Professionals in Early Modern China Seen through Grey Literature

국문 초록 (Abstract)

일구통상 정책 하에서 19세기 초 광저우는 서구 선교사들이 전파하는 종교적 메시지와 과학적 지식이 상호 보완적으로 작동하는 네트워크의 중심지 역할을 수행하고 있었다. 본고에서는 우선 의료선교의 아이디어가 형성된 주요 배경으로, 동인도회사의 해체를 전후로 한 영국의 대중국 전략을 검토했다. 이어서 관련 협회 결성을 정식으로 제안한 제안서의 서사를 분석하고, 중국의료선교회의 설립 이후 작성된 문헌과 첫 제안 사이에 발생한 변화 양상을 고찰해 보았다. 의료를 복음 전파의 효과적인 도구로 인식한 제안과 이를 서사로 구성한 제안서는, 서구적 의료 시스템을 문명의 기준으로 삼고 그 개혁의 주체로서 의료선교회를 세우는 담론의 틀을 형성하게 된다. 본 연구를 통해 서양 의술이 근대적 국가 간 연대의 형성에 주요 매개로 작동하였으며, 유용성을 중심으로 한 과학과 종교의 결합 과정에서 의료선교가 제안되고 있음을 살펴볼 수 있었다. 아울러 의료선교사가 중국 사회의 문화적 변혁을 이끌 전문직업인으로 자리매김하는 과정에서 구축된 이분법적 담론을 확인할 수 있었다.

19th-century Guangzhou was a central hub where religious messages and scientific knowledge, disseminated by Western missionaries, actively coexisted. Following the dissolution of the East India Company, shifts in China-related policies provided an opportunity for the integration of missionary work and medicine.
This paper focuses on three key documents: the 1835 “Suggestions with regard to employing medical practitioners as missionaries to China”, the 1836 Suggestions for the formation of a Medical missionary society, offered to the consideration of all Christian nations, more especially to the kindred nations of England and the United States of America” written as a response, and the 1838 The Medical missionary society in China, a published address encouraging participation in the China Medical Missionary Association, which had been formed as a concrete manifestation of the prior two documents. This study aims to demonstrate how Western medicine functioned as a crucial intermediary in fostering modern inter-state solidarity, with medical missions emerging as a method for combining science and religion, grounded in utility. The three documents observed highlight the scientific and systematic features of the Western medical system, laying the theoretical foundation for introducing an imperialistic, “civilizing” discourse into Chinese society. In this process, medical missionaries were not merely religious propagators but professional agents facilitating the cultural transformation of Chinese society. The documents reveal the evolving dynamics of Western imperialism and the changing role of missionaries within that context. The growing emphasis on medical missions as both a tool for social change and an instrument of imperial power suggests that the medical missionaries, while still acting within a religious framework, were becoming increasingly professionalized and politically involved in the cultural transformation of China. Thus, the documents foresee the challenges that medical missionaries would encounter as they navigate the complex intersection of science, religion, and imperialism.
