Since the days of Aristotle and Quintillian men have tried to find meanings in metaphor and theorize it. Both the philosophers did that. During the Mediaval Ages figurative language was prevalent in the Bible. Through the 17th and 18th centuries some philosophers such as Hobbes and Locke, who were empiricists, denied and despised the value of metaphor, and other philosophers like Kant and Nietzsche recognized the necessity and creativity of metaphor partially or wholly. Austin and Searle were also the proponents of metaphors. They treated metaphor from the view of speech acts and pragmatics.
Recently metaphor has been studied in terms of syntax and semantics, especially situation semantics. Situation semantics shows us how tautology has meanings in relation with situation. Semanticists use entailment to explain metaphorical structure and its meaning. As it is necessary to clarify the partially-overlapping characteristics of the literary terms such as metaphor, metonymy and synecdoche, some analytic verification has been given with a conclusion that metaphor subsumes metonymy and synecdoche which are not distinctive in their uses, rather interchangeable. Synecdoche is reducible to metonymy.
Spatial orientational metaphors provide us with significant syntactic and semantic knowledge. Among other things Up and Down Metaphor, and Far and Near Metaphor suggest some cues with which we can understand more basically the relationship between syntactic structures and semantic interpretation: Closeness is Strength of Effect. The closer a word is located syntactically to other word or words, the easier it is to understand the meanmg of a sentence semantically.
One of the ultimate objects of semantics is to deal with truth-conditions to verify the truth or the falsity of a proposition. Cognitive understanding of a metaphor means cognition of metaphorical truth or falsity as well.
Some models of metaphor are quoted from Lakoff. They provide sources from which many relevant words and idiomatic expressions can be deduced and applied to their usage, contributing to language acquisition.
