This article explores their public life focused on civil examination procedure and life being in government posts, on which quality of Yangban's life depended. Materials that this article based on are objects displayed in a special exhibition < Gentry of Joseon Dynasty - Special Exhibition of Donated Collections from Eminent Families in Korea >, which was held from July 14 to September 28, 2010 at Gyeonggi Provincial Museum. The exhibition was intended to explore what aims of the Joseon gentry in their life were and how they lived their lives to achieve the goal. Two hundred objects of portraits, documents, and books selected from donated collections from eminent families in Korea were produced in the Joseon period and donated to Gyeonggi Provincial Museum in Youngin, Korea by thirty eminent families of Korea for last 25 years. These objects with which this article discusses are as follows: < Answer Sheet of an Civil Service Exam >, < Certificate of Passing Civil Service Examination >, < Admission List of a State Examination >, < Appointment Letter >, < Official Robes >, < Royal Command Letter >, < Document of Salaries >, < Official Diaries >, < Royal Edict to Award a Posthumous Title >, < Royal Certificate of Meritorious Subject >, < Portraits of Royal Gifts for Achievements >, etc. Donated collections from eminent families of Korea are consisted primarily of these portraits and ancient documents. Because they are articles left by the deceased who brought honor and glory to their family, their descendants have treated and preserved these properties with devotion as they do their forefathers. Yangban in Joseon Dynasty literally meaning two bans refers to civil functionaries and military nobility. Initially Yangban was not a term based on law but a conventional term and gradually had been changed into a concept signifying class. Those who were in this class received special rights such as exemption from military service. The special rights attracted people and made them have wishes to become Yangban. In order to be Yangban and maintain its position they had to pass civil examinations and get to government service. Everyone except the lowest class such as servants was able to take the examinations. However, because it took a few decades to pass them, only examinees from high class who were supported by their family were able to prepare for the examinations. The law compelled people to observe Confusion ideology and Jujagarye [Zhu-xi Family Courtesy] through the whole period of Joseon dynasty. It was through these system that gender discrimination and class distinctions finally became set in finally in the late Joseon. Therefore the late Joseon was very different society from that of the early Joseon still under the influence of Buddhism. In this point the early Joseon society was more similar to the late Goryeo dynasty (918-1392), which was Buddhist society than to the late Joseon dynasty. Civil service examination system in Joseon dynasty continued through the whole history of the dynasty without big changes. Those in positions also were able to take the examinations to promote their positions. It was regarded as top honor to rise to the rank of one of three prime misters called jeonseung. It was also very honorary to receive honorary chair and staffs of royal gift and to enter elderly scholor-officials' club. When officials in high position were not able to retire because of pending issues even though they were over 70 years old, the king presented them a chair and staffs, which were very rare. When high position officials turned 70s, they entered the elderly scholor-officials club, which kings in 70s entered as well. When officials made a significant contribution to their country, they were proclaimed as a meritorious subject. The installation of it also assured their parents and wife in the same level of honorary position as they achieved. Lands and servants were conferred as merit awards for achievements and were hereditary. In this way the personal honor was also an honor for their family. When officials in the high position died, they received posthumous title from government through royal edicts. There happened sometimes to remove the deceased from office or to reinstate in their position even. In this sense Joseon gentries virtually were able to retire from office.
