AbstractThis is the age of cyberspace at the turn of the third new millenium. The term
"cyberspace" was coined by the science fiction writer William Gibson (1948 - ) in
his novel Neuromancer. Cyberspace is an electronically defined world in which a
human can experience an environment completely outside the one that he or she
physically occupies. Gibson's imaginative rendition of the concept is a good deal ahead
of the technology presently available and more distopian than most writings on the
subject. The seminal text of this new genre is Gibson's novel whose hero is a
"cyberspace cowboy." An information thief electronically penetrates a
world-encompassing computer net in search of data he can steal. His experience inside
the "virtual reality" of the net work and his punkish indifference to politics, power, or
ethical issues signal an equally relevant message offered by Cyberpunk writers. Gibson
has created a sense of the near future where Japanese corporations dominate a
cybernetic universe in which its protagonists scramble for survival in an information
network called "cyberspace." Clearly not himself computer literate, Gibson has
succeeded in creating an environment existentially shaped by the information revolution.William Gibson is the main inventor of Cyberpunk novel whose aesthetics and politics
are both to embrace the new cybernetic world-environment in the novel and to resist
the oppression of the multinational post-industrial Western society. This kind of
"both-and" strategy is the gist of William Gibson's literary imagination in his brand
new genre, cyberspace novel. This is why we should turn our attention to the new
possibility and feasibility of the aesthetics and politics of the so-called cyberspace novel
for the new third millenium.
