박태원 기획 권영희 집필 『갑오농민전쟁』 제3부의 서술 특성과 서사 의미 = Reading Kwon Young-hee’s narration and narrative of Gabo Peasant War (Gabo nongmin jeonjaeng) Part 3

Part 3 of Park Tae-won's historical novel Gabo Peasant War is a book planned by Park Tae-won and written by Kwon Young-hee. Gabo Peasant War Part 3 was easy to interpret as the result of crude reproduction of people and history of the years of late 19th century, and there are cases where it is argued that the multidimensionality and verisimilitudity of the previous books disappeared and rigidity and ideology emerged. Our paper focuses on Part 3 of 󰡔Gabo Peasant War󰡕, which has not been actively interpreted so far, and attempted to infer the influence of author Kwon Young-hee on narrative characteristics and narrative meaning and derive the uniqueness of Part 3.
The narrative characteristics of Gabo Peasant War Part 3 is that when the narrator reproduces the characters' language, the narrator's words and the characters' words tend to be separated from each other in narrative discourse, and while the narrator actively refers to Oh Ji-yeong's Donghaksa as material for story development, she borrows Oh Ji-young's sentences. Through these characteristics, the overall thematic structure of <Gabo Peasant War Plan>, which is the conflict of words between classes, is directly revealed.
What our paper focused on in order to interpret the meaning of the narrative in Part 3 is that, unlike previous books, it included stories of female characters directly participating and fighting in the peasant war. It is inferred that the reason women are described as practical subjects in Sections 14, 15, and 16 of Part 3 is because this book was written by Kwon Young-hee. Our paper reveals that the stories of these three female characters, namely Yoon Young-ah, Han Eum-jeon, and an unnamed woman of Hoemunsan mountain, are each based on actual history and events, therefore the uniqueness of the narrative in Part 3 is that new subjectivity is given to these female characters.
In Gabo Peasant War Part 3, new possibilities of female characters in <Gabo Peasant War Project>, ‘fighting women’ and ‘loving women’, appeared. Having completed Park Tae-won's plan to write a historical novel in which the commoner class endured tragic defeat and continued the fight as faithful subjects, Kwon Young-hee added the images of plebeian female subjects.
