This is an attempt to study women in Wilde's four comedies-Lady windmere's Fan, A Woman of No Importance, An Ideal Husband and The Importance of being Earnest through the close examination of the plays. Wilde's feminism is one of the least commonly recognized aspect of his progressive ideas. He was, however, a consistent champion of women's rights both in his life and his work, supporting all the primary demands of late nineteenth-century feminism. His doctrine was in essence that of a utopian anarchist, preaching the doctrine of individualism and aestheticism. Wilde always liked to create manly women and womanly men, as a challege to the stratified thinking of his day and demonstrates that the gender-antitheses of the age were almost meaningless through the characterization of female leads.
Lady Windmere's Fan is heavily indebted to other contemporary plays, yet Wilde did not simply borrow material but used the plot mechanism and characters of the traditional dramas of the fallen woman and delinquent mother to produce a complex and revolutionary play. Individualism is its true doctrine, a doctrine subtly disguised by the surface melodrama of the play. Thus, Mrs. Erlynne rejects the maternal role, preferring her freedom to the restrictive duties of a mother. In a denouement of incomplete revelation, Mrs. Erlynne, the fallen woman is the only character with complete knowledge, who has a wit and wisdom which surpass that of the protective man and the innocent female. And the 'good' Lady Windmere's matured classification of Mrs. Erlynne as 'good' rather than 'infamous' is also a small step on the road to the conversion of the conventional into the radical.
A Woman of No Importance is not a play of 'action', a traditionally male preserve, but a woman's play' of female leads. Female characters dominate the play and three types of 'new woman' are delineated in the characters of Mrs. Arbuthnot, Hester, and Mrs. Allonby. Together they act out a confrontation with all sexual laws and restrictions, showing them to he both ineffectual against the power of passion and impulse. Mrs. Arbuthnot struggles with an absolute morality which denies all her true instincts as a woman, while the women of Hanstanton take advantage of their supposedly weaker status to manipulate the men around them. Thus every woman in this play is an individualist in her own way.
An Ideal Husband treats another topic of vital and widespread importance to nineteenth society - the role of women. Yet Wilde's treatment of women contrasts not only with French thesis play such as Duma's plays, but also with the works of popular contemporary playwrights like Arthur Pinero. Beneath the surface melodrama of society intrigue, political blackmail, and conventional definitions of sexual roles lies a more subtly contradictory play of satire and realization of individualism not only through the superiority of female dandy Mable Chiltern of subplot to male dandy Lord Goring of main plot but also through the irony of the title, which reveals the complexities beneath the traditional cliches of ideal and idolizing woman and ambitious, protective man.
The Importance of Being Earnest is remarkable less for any specific satire than for the fact that the play itself is the perfect realization of all Wilde's anarchist ideals -individualism and aestheticism; it is the society of 'The Soul of Man under Socialism' made real, which is a utopia where all attempts to assert authority are doomed to failure and its characters are free to realize themselves perfectly. Within a deceptively familiar farcical structure, Wilde not only smuggled in sharp satirical criticism of his society and its mores, he also realized his most idealistic theories of self-development, whose world has no authority and no laws. The willful lovers of The Importance are the embodiment of Wilde's philosophy of perfect individualism.
