전통등(燈)의 현대적 활용을 위한 콘텐츠 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

등(燈)은 불을 밝히는 도구이다. 어둠을 밝히는 일 뿐 아니라 일상의 통과의례에서 적극 활용되어왔다. 불교가 전래되면서 등불에는 어둠 을 밝히는 일 외에도 새로운 의미가 부여되었다. 등불을 밝히는 연등 (燃燈)은 탐욕과 욕심, 어리석음의 삼독(三毒)에 젖은 자신의 무명(無 明)을 지혜로 밝힌다는 상징성을 지니고 있다. 등불을 밝히는 전통은 이러한 상징성 아래에 정성스럽게 이루어져 왔다. 중요무형문화재 제 122호 연등회는 1,200년 역사를 이어오는 ‘등 (燈)’으로 대표되는 축제이다. 연등회가 주목받으면서 연등회를 벤치 마킹한 다양한 등관련 축제, 혹은 등을 소재로 한 축제들이 곳곳에서 마련되고 있다. 본 논문은 축제 현장에서 인기를 모으고 있는 전통등 의 역사와 현주소를 진단하고, 전통등 문화의 현대적 활용을 위한 콘텐츠를 제안하는 연구이다. 등을 주제로 하는 축제, 등을 소재로 하는 축제, 소망등을 연계한 축 제를 통해 전통등이 축제 현장에서 어떻게 활용되고 있는지를 분석하 면서 전통 등문화의 활용에 관해서 궁중문화콘텐츠, 공예문화콘텐츠, 교육문화콘텐츠, 종교문화콘텐츠의 관점에서 제시하였다. 특히 궁중문화콘텐츠 분야에서는 문화재청의 ‘살아 숨쉬는 5대궁 사업’과 실록에 전하는 4월초파일 기록을 연계할 것을 제안하였으며, 교육문화콘텐츠 분야에서는 고령화 시대에 노인일자리 사업을 통한 노년층의 전통등 만들기 사업을 역설하였다. 공예문화콘텐츠 분야에 서는 전통등 장인을 제대로 대우하며 육성할 것을 제시하였고, 종교문 화콘텐츠 분야에서는 종교 기념일마다 전통등 만들기가 다채롭게 진 행되어야 함을 강조하였다. 전통등 만들기의 전과정은 한국의 전통문화가 총체적으로 집합된 종합예술이다. 닥종이가 활용되고 천연 염색이 뒤따르고, 오방색으로 의 채색이 이루어지는 전 과정이 친환졍적이면서 한국적 고유성과 미 의식을 보여주는 과정이다. 손수 등을 만들고 만든 등을 걸어놓고 불 을 밝힌뒤 즐기는 관등문화를 통해 잃어버린 신명을 회복하는 것이 오늘의 과제이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Not only were lanterns a tool used to light up darkness, but they were also widely used in ceremonial rites of passage and festivals. Lighting a lantern is called yeon-deung. Yeon-deung bears the symbolic significance of brightening one’s self tainted with the Three Poisons—greed, anger and ignorance. Under the symbolism, the tradition of lighting a lantern has continued. Designated as Important Intangible Cultural Property No. 122, Yeong Deung Hoe is the most renowned lantern festival with 1,300 years of history. There are today many lantern-related festivals replicating Yeon Deung Hoe as it has gained public attention. The thesis initially places its focus on the history of traditional lanterns. It comprehensively lists for the first time the types and roles of traditional lanterns from Silla Kingdom up to the period of Japanese colonization through written records. The thesis then examines the OSMU (One Source Multi Use) of traditional lanterns used in Yeon Deung Hoe through various festivals of today. Through the festivals in which a lantern the motif, the material and the medium of expressing people’s wishes, it explores how traditional lanterns are utilized. The thesis eventually suggests several ways to revitalize the traditional lantern heritage from the perspectives of royal court culture content, craft culture content, education culture content and religion culture content. In the part of royal court culture content, the thesis proposes to link the record on Buddha’s Birthday from the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty with Cultural Heritage Administration’s Five Palaces Project. In the part of education culture content, it advocates a project employing the elderly in making traditional lanterns under the context of today’s aging society. In the part of craft culture content, it advises cultivating grounds for both today’s and tomorrow’s traditional lantern artists with fair treatment and due respect. In religion culture content, it emphasized the idea of making traditional lanterns during religious holidays. Every process of making traditional lanterns is a composite art in which Korean traditional cultures are comprehensively collected. The whole process in which Dakjongyi (a paper made from the bark of a paper mulberry) is used, natural dye is followed, and Korean traditional five colors are employed for coloration is not just environmental-friendly but also authentic and aesthetic in Korean way. The challenge faced today is to restore the lost “festivity” once prevalent in and among Koreans through the lantern culture.
