서울 單獨住宅地區의 家族關係 : 老父母側의 隘路點 = A Survey of Aged Parents' Difficulties in Family-relation at a Residential Quarter in Seoul

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study was undertaken with the aim to survey some of the difficulties or dissatisfaction which Korean aged parents may have or feel, within the limits of the family-relation, of which the variables are chiefly the ways of thinking and behavior of the members of the family. The gathering of information was carried out during the period from Tuesday, August 9 to Friday, August 12, 1983. The samples are 140 aged fathers(58) and mothers(82) who are over sixty years old, each of whom lives with his or her son's family, without the ability to support the whole family mainly by himself or herself.
The results obtained are as follows:
1. Filial respect
Korean aged people of today were brought up on the moral principles of stern "HYO" of Korea which once ruled not only family-relation but also the society at large, and served their own parents devotedly regarding it as a natural filial duty. The first of the moral principles of Korean "HYO" is the filial respect, "KYONG". It is, therefore, quite natural that they should expect filial respect of their sons and daughters-in-law.
The results of the survey brought it to light that 80% of the samples were enjoying the esteem of their sons and daughters-in-law, with insignificant difference in the degree.
2. The management of household affairs
Korean aged parents in the past not only represented the family, but also had the power of final decision on all family affairs under the patriarchal system and moral of Korea, even if they had no earnings of their own. Moreover they still long for the prosperity of their family everlasting through generations and the happiness of their offspring instead of their own, according to many surveys or studies.
But it was revealed that 52.2% of the samples have no or little chance even to participate in deciding on important household affairs.
3. The priority in family life
Korean aged parents in the past also had priority over other members of the family in every matters of the family life.
But it was disclosed that more than half of the samples were not enjoying the traditional priority at least in such matters as the choice of food and its seasoning, purchase of clothing, the choice of television programs. and the allotment of rooms to be used by the members of the family.
In short, most of the Korean aged parents of today within the category of the samples at the residential quarter in Seoul are enjoying the filial esteem of their sons and daughters-in-law almost as much as of yore, but no longer final decision-makers on material household affairs, nor given priority over their offspring in food, clothing, shelter, and entertainments.
