This study aimed at analyzing the changes of behavioral characteristics of children in low-income families according to the decrease in these children’s psychological and behavioral maladaptive conduct due to the development and application of a group play and art therapy program whose goal was to improve these children’ maladaptive behavior.
Toward this end, this study selected two test groups of children (four to five years old), each of which consists of six children in low-income families, who showed maladaptive behavior, two control groups, each of which also consists of six children (four to five years old), and one comparative group of six children (four to five years old) in normal families who shoed maladaptive behavior.
The testing tool was a group play and art therapy program, which was developed based on the emotional development theory and therapeutic advantages of group play and art activities, and consists of physical movement play, cooperative games and art media in the self-awareness and self-expression phase, the awareness of others and correlation phase, and the control, integration and completion phase so as to help students develop the ability of self-awareness and expression. A total of 12 sessions of the program was offered to the children for about two months. Two session, each of which was 60 minutes long, was offered in a week.
For the measuring tools, the study used the ‘preschooler maladaptive behavior scale’ for teachers for the quantitative analysis and measured and analyzed the data before and after the program as well as the follow-up test. For the qualitative analysis, the study, first, analyzed children’s behavioral characteristics based on the activities in each session, second, conducted a comparative analysis of Kinetic School Drawing(KSD) and Kinetic Family Drawing(KFD), children’s pictures, third, observed the children’s behavioral changes, which the study analyzed by converting them into average scopes with abbreviated Conners assessment scale, and finally, fourth, recorded and analyzed the interviews of the observer with the teacher in charge of the children and mothers of the children.
The result of this study is as follows: first, the test groups to which the group play and art therapy program was offered showed a statistically significant difference in the maladaptive behavior reduction effect, compared to the control groups to which the program was not offered, and the comparative group to which the program was offered; second, the group play and art therapy program was shown to be effective in reducing the psychological maladaptive behavior as there was a statistically significant difference in sub-level factors in psychological maladaptive behavior, such as anxiety, being intimidated, dependency; third, the group play and art therapy program showed a statistically significant difference in the sub-level factor in behavioral maladaptive conduct, such as aggression, and being distracted and impulse were shown to have a continuing reduction effect in the individual and post-program analysis; fourth, the program reduced maladaptive behavior by phase, showing qualitative changes; and finally, fifth, the program was shown to continue to reduce the maladaptive behavior sometime after the program was offered to the children. Therefore, it is believed that the group play and art therapy program can be utilized as a psychological therapy program which, besides support them emotionally, can improve preschoolers’ psychological and behavioral maladaptive conduct.
