This is a study of the tragic aspects of the three women, Queen Inmoktaebi, Queen Inhynwanghoo, and Hyekyungkoonghongsi who are the heroines of the ancient Court novels, Kyechookilki, Inhyunwanghoochun, and Hanchoongrok respectively. Queen Inmoktaebi is a concubine of King Suncho, Queen Inhyunwanghoo is King Sookchong's second wife, and Hyekyungkoonghonsi is Prince Sadoseja's wife. All of the three women went to the Court as young girls and lived tragic lives among riches. Kyechookilki is about Queen Inmoktaebi's love for Prince Yungchangtaegoon, her son. In Inhyunwanghoochun Queen Min's virtue is constrasted with Changhibin, and Hanchoongrok is about not only Hong's sorrow over her sick husband, Prince Sadoseja, but her persistence in making her son, Chungcho, a king.
Here I compare the tragic nature of the three women: First, under the strict Confucian society, a wife was like a servant to her husband. This relationship is known as "시집살이". Moreover the society had unfortunate marriage customs: every person usually got married when he was ten years old. This custom was strictly followed, especially in the Court which was a symbol of the upper class. These three women were victims of the regulations of the Confucian society.
Second, these three women were like birds in a cage. The palace was a cage, and in this palace, they were completely isolated from the world outside by a wall. These cages are Sukoong (Queen Inmoktaebi's house), Kamgotang (Queen Inhynwanghoo's house), and Changkyungkoong (HyekyungKoong's house). So the strict Court life made them long for the simple lives of free men.
Third, court intrigue deepened their grief. Queen Inmoktaebi spent her life surrounded by the intrigues of the Taepookpa and Sopookpa (these two factions were backing King Kwanghaekoon and Yungchangtaekoon respectively). Queen Inhynwanghoo endured not only the quarrells of the Noron and Soron, but also of the Namin and Soin. Hyekyungkoong Hongsi also hated her life because of the conflicts between the Sipa and Pyukpa over Imowhapyun affair (the death of Prince Sadoseja).
Fourth, in their sorrow each woman made all kinds of sacrifice in order to make her own son a king. Queen Hyekyungkoong made her son a king (Chungcho) after his grandfather, King Yungcho, died. Changhibin also made her son a king (Kyungchong) after his father, King Sookchong; In order to do this she had to do many evil deeds. But Queen Inmoktaebi who was imprisoned for 10 years in Sukoong had the chance to make her son king during the Inchopanchung affair, but her son, Prince Yungchangtaekoon, had been killed by King Kwanghaekoon.
Fifth, under these situations, we cannot expect deep love between Queens and kings. At the age of 19 Queen Inmoktaebi was married to King Suncho who was 51 years old. Queen Inhyunwanghoo, at 15, got married to King Sookchong, 21 years old; and Hyekyungkoong at the age of 10 to Prince Sadoseja. A woman's love for her husband withered under formalities and repressions. It's no wonder that no love literature developed in the Orient.
Sixth, contemplating their unbappiness, all the queens longed for their homes. By becoming queens these women brought much suffering to their parents. Hyekyungkoong tried to get rid of her father's (Hong Bonghan) disgrace and Queen Inmoktaebi longed for her parents and suffered because of her parents, clamily.
Seventh, the last point is about exorcism which was performed in order to curse others. Court intrigues were caused by men but the women practiced exorcism ("굿" and 방정술). In Inhyunwanghoochun, Changhibin's curses in the long run killed Queen Inhyunwanghoo, Prince Sadoseja's illness, in Hanchoongrok, was caused by exorcism, and the Yunung Exorcism affair in Kyechookilki was a model of exorcism. They used intrigue and curses as a means of attaining victory.
I have analized seven of the tragic aspects of the women in the three ancient court novels. In short these three women are "a mass of grief." We can attain our own catharsis and depict an ideal society through their unhappy lives.
