Epigraphs hold significant historical value as artifacts that reflect social as
pects, requiring thorough scholarly investigation. They offer insights into cult
ural, social, and ideological studies, providing understanding of daily customs
and social structures by interpreting the inscriptions and comparing them with
historical backgrounds. While stone stelae are more common, iron stelae (Che
ol-bi) are rare in historical heritage. Unfortunately, many iron stelae have bee
n exposed to the outdoors and suffered significant damage, making it difficult
to identify the original inscriptions. The loss or damage of these iron stelae
would result in the disappearance of a part of our history and culture. Hence,
this paper aims to determine the cultural value of iron stelae by examining th
eir current status, background, inscriptions, and symbolic meanings. Additional
ly, it focuses on the environmental conditions and reasons for damage to prov
ide appropriate preservation methods and emphasize the necessity of conservat
ion.
The study surveyed 100 iron stelae located in South Korea, with the
highest numbers found in Jeollanam-do (31) and Gyeongsangnam-do (22),
among other regions. The deciphering of the iron stelae was prioritized in
this research as it is crucial for understanding individuals' lives and inferring
historical backgrounds. The results revealed that most of the iron stelae were
established between the 17th and 20th centuries, from the late Joseon
Dynasty to the Japanese colonial period. These stelae were primarily
dedicated to promoting good governance among local officials, but there were
also rare cases dedicated to women, packmen, and those who raised funds for
education.
Commemorative stelae of the Joseon Dynasty were erected to honor the
virtues of those who resolved social issues and impart lessons to the people.
The use of iron for these stelae corresponds to the symbolic meaning
associated with gold in the theory of yin and yang, representing purity,
abundance, and autumn's separation. Thus, the establishment of iron stelae as
commemorative monuments signifies the recognition of an officer's public
virtue and their character.
The paper aims to enhance the cultural value of iron stelae by first
understanding their construction background and presenting their historical
significance. The authors analyzed the increase in stela construction by
examining the locations of local government stelae, which increased due to
the reorganization of the local government system. They also compared the
locations of iron stelae with documented iron mines, focusing on mining
development and the distribution of iron products resulting from mine
privatization. While the locations of iron stelae generally corresponded to the
iron mines, the number of investigated iron stelae in Chungcheong Province
was relatively low compared to the number of iron mines. However, iron
stelae concentrated in Jeollanam-do and Gyeongsangnam-do provinces showed
a significant number of titles related to military camps. The authors found
that the production of iron objects increased in military camps after the
Japanese Invasion of Korea (1592) and the Manchu Invasion of Korea (1636),
leading to advancements in ironworking technology and an increased demand
for iron from military camps. The production and distribution of iron were
under the discretion of local officials, and iron produced in government
ironworks was distributed to military camps. The construction of iron stelae
can be inferred as a result of the interplay between social changes and trends
in the Joseon Dynasty.
Furthermore, the paper analyzes the decipherment of inscriptions on iron
stelae and the symbolic meanings of their designs to examine their cultural
significance. Most of the deciphered inscriptions followed a standardized
format of four-character lines and poems praising virtue. These inscriptions
often praised the virtues and achievements of the subjects of the stelae, who
were regarded as role models for society. The designs depicted on the iron
stelae predominantly originated from the East and carried idealistic meanings
symbolizing the character of the subjects or their aspirations to overcome
turbulent times. This research provides valuable reference materials for
Korean cultural studies through the analysis of calligraphy in the inscriptions,
studies on poetry, and the temporal flow of traditional patterns.
Despite their historical and cultural value, the majority of iron stelae are c
urrently preserved with oxidized surfaces and have not been adequately prote
cted from damage. The paper investigates the preservation environment of iro
n stelae, addressing issues such as surface pollution, damage, and cracks. Tw
enty iron stelae were selected for analysis of their preservation environment a
nd condition using scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spe
ctroscopy (SEM/EDS). In 12 cases, a comparison of oxygen and iron content
provided insights into visible corrosion. The presence of silicon and aluminum
detected, along with the observed preservation condition of the iron stelae, ma
tched the presence of soil particles. While the ratio of iron and oxygen could
not be calculated for eight iron stelae, a detailed examination of their surfaces
revealed the presence of soil components, organic materials from casting, and
impurities. The identification of sodium, considered a corrosive factor for iron
stelae, through elemental analysis of the iron stelae surface suggests the need
for preventive conservation measures.
The paper identifies the causes of corrosion in iron stelae, such as damage
occurring during the casting process at the time of their production and envir
onmental factors contributing to their deterioration. The layer of foreign subst
ances that entered during casting and remained trapped creates a weak protec
tive layer, making the stelae vulnerable to damage. Additionally, environmenta
l factors such as contact with electrolytes like water and soil can lead to che
mical reactions and subsequent corrosion. Other damaging factors for iron stel
ae include salts (NaCl) present in the atmosphere, sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ir
on-oxidizing bacteria found in groundwater or soil.
Finally, the preservation processes of two iron stelae in Uljin and
Goheung, along with the preservation processes of the Cheongju Yongdu
Temple iron pagoda and the Paju Jangdan Station steam locomotive, were
examined. The paper provides a summary of preservation processes, methods,
and precautions to prevent further damage to outdoor metal cultural heritage.
It also presents comparative studies on optimal surface coatings based on
preservation research of industrial cultural heritage abroad. Furthermore, the
paper suggests the use of reproductions or replicas of iron stelae to prevent
the loss of their original value due to damage and presents examples of their
utilization for research, education, exhibition, and restoration purposes.
Therefore, this study highlights the remaining iron stelae in Korea as cult
ural heritage with historical significance. However, it emphasizes that the ele
mental characteristics of iron stelae and their preservation environment have
not been adequately considered, resulting in their exposure to damaging factor
s. Through this research, it is expected to provide a deeper understanding an
d interest in iron stelae, and continuous preservation efforts can ensure their
preservation as cultural resources for future generations.
