The purpose of this study is to reveal the relationship between the intensity of exercise and the changes to metabolism variables caused by uptake of high concentration oxygen during the recovery period.
The subjects in this study were fourteen male college students(average age of 21.8+-1.9)who did not have any health problems. In the first experiment, the heart rate and the electrocardiogram of each subject were measured after resting for five minutes on a seat and then a Quinton Q65 treadmill was used to measure the maximum oxygen uptake("O^(2max)") In addition, karvonen formula was applied to calculate %HRR by exercise intensity(%HRR=(HRmax-HRrest)×%+HRrest).
In the second experiment, each subject exercised at 40% HRR and 80% HRR level and their hematological variables and respiratory variables were analyzed comparatively using passive recovery method and oxygen supply method.
For analysis of the accumulated data, SPSS 12.0 software was used to compute the mean and the standard deviation for each treatment. In order to observe the effect of uptake of normal oxygen and high-concentration oxygen on the dependent variables depending on the recovery period and the different exercise intensity, a two-way ANOVA with repeated measures was performed.
The level of significance for statistical analysis for this study was 0.05 and Scheffe's least significant difference multiple comparison test was applied to show if there were any significant changes caused by the uptake of high-concentration oxygen compared to an uptake of normal oxygen. In addition, a paired-sample t-test was used to show the effect on the recovery period caused by the uptake of normal oxygen and high-concentration oxygen.
After the analysis, the following conclusions were drawn:
1. After the 40% O2max level exercise, there was no significant change to hematological variable caused by uptake of high-co
ncentration oxygen. However, a significant change to respiratory variables was found. (p<.05)
2. After the 80% O2max level exercise, there was no significant change to hematological variable caused by uptake of high-concentration oxygen. However, a significant change to respiratory variables was found. (p<.05)
In conclusion, from the above results, it is revealed that the additional uptake of high-concentration oxygen during the recovery period after exercising at 40% HRR and 80% HRR level does not give rise to significant changes to the hematological fatigue elements significantly ; however, it does influence affect the respiratory variables effectively. Therefore, I believe that a further study which simultaneously analyzer the effect of both active recovery method and oxygen uptake will reveal a more scientifically cogent conclusion on the recovery process.
