버지니아 울프의 『파도』연구 : 형식과 기법을 중심으로 = The Form and Technique of Virginia Woolf's The Waves

In the early twentieth century when Virginia Woolf worked as a writer, the public background of belief no longer existed. Consequently, the young and innovative novelists had to redefine what was significant in life and they sought it in subjective human consciousness.
Virginia Woolf consider life or personality not as an easily seized and fixed object, but as an endlessly changing consciousness. To render the inarticulate human consciousness effectively, Woolf experimented continually. The Waves, the result of her experimentation, is meaningful as a radical departure from her previous novels in technique and form.
The purpose of this paper is to examine the form and the techniques in The Waves. To this end I will survey the roles of 'prose poems' in relation to the main parts of The Waves and study the peculiarities and techniques of the main parts.
First, prose poems serve as a substitute for the lack of time unity in this work. Secondly, they present all the essential motifs as the overtures to operas do. Thirdly, the world of prose poems appears with two contradictory aspects. It can give a momentary peace and a sense of communion to man, but it also can be a force which drives man to the realm of death with its relentless passage of time. As we have seen so far, the prose poems complement the meaning of the main parts and they are also closely related to the thematic aspect of this novel.
In The Waves Woolf tried to embody the six streams of consciousness more directly than before. The fact that the stream of consciousness in this novel is not based upon the immediate context differentiates this novel from the typical stream of consciousness novels. It is reorganised with the carefully selected words to embody the inarticulate inner mind of man effectively and compressedly. Woolf used pictorial images and metaphors widely and many motifs define the essence of the characters' personalities. These motifs complement to a certain extent the limitation of uniform style of this novel. One image can be used with various meanings, or enlarged in meaning like a snow-ball as the novel develops, so when the reader faces it later he can remember alt the past scenes together.
