Unlike in China and Japan, the Ananyagāmin faith, along with the Avalokiteśvara faith, constituted an additional pillar of the Mount Potalaka faith during the Goryeo period in Korea. Historical records on Naksan-sa Temple in Yangyang in the Samguk yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms) and records on the creation of the statues of Avalokiteśvara and Ananyagāmin at Yongam-sa Temple in Jinju are clear illustrations of the nature of the Mount Potalaka faith of the Goryeo period. Statues of Ananyagāmin are enshrined together with those of Avalokiteśvara in both Naksan-sa Temple and Yongam-sa Temple; and Naksan-sa Temple is situated on Naksan Mountain (Korea’s Mount Potalaka) – the point of encounter between Ananyagāmin Bodhisattva and Sudhana, and the place where Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva is believed to live. Books like The Pilgrimage of Sudhana, written during China’s Song Dynasty and transmitted to and subsequently widely read throughout Goryeo, paved the way for the Mount Potalaka faith, which combined the Ananyagāmin and Avalokiteśvara faiths, to embed itself firmly within Goryeo’s culture. However, as the aforementioned books have not survived to the present day in Korea, records in books written by Uicheon, such as the Collected Writings of the State Preceptor Daegak or Wonjong mullyu (A book of collected writings and commentaries by the Hwaeom masters), serve instead as a testament to the plausibility of their introduction during the Goryeo period. The open and embracing attitude of Goryeo-era Hwaeom masters towards such ideas as Li Tongxuan’s theory on the “oneness of wisdom and compassion” may have contributed to the unique nature of the Mount Potalaka faith, which combines the Ananyagāmin and Avalokiteśvara faiths and is distinct from that of China’s Song Dynasty or Japan’s Kamakura Period - where The Pilgrimage of Sudhana and similar books were just as widely read as in Goryeo, but where no signs or traces of the Ananyagāmin faith are to be found. This study newly suggests that the <Painting of Ananyagāmin Bodhisattva> in Senso-ji Temple, Kyoto, Japan is a surviving artwork that reflects the Ananyagāmin faith of the Goryeo period. According to the traditional interpretation of certain symbols within the painting, such as the representation of Sudhana standing by the water, the nirmāna-buddha on the Bodhisattva’s crown, the willow branch and the kuṇḍika in both his hands, it is a painting of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva in Mount Potalaka. Conversely, this study has determined that it is more likely that the painting portrays Ananyagāmin Bodhisattva, judging from the Bodhisattva’s standing posture and droplet-shaped halo, and a backdrop that is seemingly filled with water or a complete void. The Ananyagāmin faith was widely held and taught throughout the Goryeo period and up until the latter days of the Joseon period in the seventeenth century. No traces of the faith’s continued existence beyond eighteenth-century Joseon can be found anywhere. The Ananyagāmin statues preserved at Naksan-sa Temple and Yongam-sa Temple - at one time the last two remaining statues of Ananyagāmin in the country - were destroyed. The Mount Potalaka faith of Goryeo, which focused on the accomplishment of a state of harmony, or “oneness”, between wisdom (Ananyagāmin Bodhisattva) and compassion (Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva), turned into an imperfect faith with only one of its two pillars - compassion - surviving intact. The rediscovery of the painting of a standing Ananyagāmin Bodhisattva in Senso-ji Temple restored the dignity of Ananyagāmin Bodhisattva and in effect provided the momentum for the full restoration of Korea’s Mount Potalaka faith, which believed in the harmony between Avalokiteśvara and Ananyagāmin, or between wisdom and compassion. The newly discovered painting of Ananyagāmin forms a complete set with the painting of Avalokiteśvara sitting on a diamond, which, when put together, create a complete painting of Bodhisattvas in Mount Potalaka.
