Tairano Kiyomori was a samurai of the late Heian period and was well known through the Japanese medieval literature “Heike Monogatari”.
“Heike Monogatari” has been used as a subject for many literary works since the Middle Ages. Among them There are many differences in the use of Tairano Kiyomori as the subject of literary works since before and after modern times
Tairano Kiyomori which had not been used as a material before modern times began to be utilized as the pivotal material of works of art after it as Japanese literary history was established after the Meiji Restoration in the process of reconsidering (再考) the composition of the character of Kiyomori and accordingly, revaluation of 『Heike Monogatari』 became an important influence factor.
However, it could be found that Kiyomori’s desire and later generations’ attitude to admit and accept this had an effect on the gap of the composition which had not been changed through the composition of the basic character of Kiyomori and the reconsideration (再考) and reinterpretation. In 6 short stories after modern times, the composition of the character of Kiyomori mostly had similar forms. He is rough, bad-tempered, and selfish characters clinging to power. However, the biggest difference between the characters before and after modern times is that there is the relationships between Kiyomori and the people who understand, accept, and are convinced of him around him.
In the NHK historical drama < Tairano Kiyomori > which were broadcast in 2012, an effect of Kiyomori’s desire on the composition of the character by focusing on the relationship with him could be examined. Kiyomori’s desire in the drama appeared by largely dividing it into three stages based on his life story. Hope of ‘the world that warriors live’ which began from Maiko, his mother, is sent to Kiyomori through Dadamori, his father. Kiyomori who was looking for what the world for warriors is enters the center of power to create the country that he wants, the warriors’ world, experiencing Hōgen Rebellion and Heiji rebellion. He needed power to create the warriors’ world and constantly extended his desire for power to acquire power. He was defeated by his desire extended like this. However, the world for warriors that Kiyomori hoped was again connected to Yoritomo and the tradition continued. And eventually, a warrior government was established by doing Kamakura shogunate.
The composition of Kiyomori’s character shown in several works of art including 『Heike Monogatari』 describes the person who grows and change according to the stages that his desire changes in the dramas.
