The aim of this research is to examine the academic and political life of Kim, Kwengpil who lived from the mid-fifteenth century until the early sixteenth century, and was a member of the Youngnam school of literati. Kim, Kwengpil was not just an historic figure, but an important means to understand the development of Confucianism in Joseon and the political and social situation he faced.
Kim, Kwengpil spent the most active stage of his life under the reign of king Songjong and Yonsangun. This period also experienced the first stage in the development of the literati. However, it was a hard time for the literati as they were politically defeated by the meritorious elite who strongly opposed the political reform program of the literati. Kim, Kwengpil also were persecuted and died during the Purge of 1504(Kapcha Sahwa).
As King Chungjong's reign begun, Kim, Kwengpil's honour was restored and his disciples such as Cho, Kwangjo and Kim, Ankook and launched the reform program with a stronger enthusiasm. This was the second stage in the development of the literati. However, the reform program of the literati ended with the Purge of 1519(Kimyo Sahwa). when the most literati leaders were defeated and persecuted again by the meritorious retainers. However, Kim, Kwengpil was not criticised.
It was the early period of Sonjo's reign that the literati had another chance to enter into the politics. Kim, Kwengpil was again given a posthumous title. Kim, Kwengpil was also widely acknowledged as the real founder of the Joseon confucianism as the genealogical line proved as Kim, Chongjik - Kim, Kwengpil - Cho, Kwangjo - Lee, Onjok - Lee, Hwang. The literati was faced now the third stage of development. The fourth stage was the early reign of king Kwanghaegun when Kim, Kwengpil was enshrined in Confucian shrines as one of five scholars. It was a clear indication of Kim, Kwengpil's importance in Korean history that both Kim, Kwengpil and his disciple Cho, Kwangjo were enshrined together, though he ended his life tragically without any fulfillment of his program.
