Islamic eschatology is dealt within ‘ilm al-kalām. In modern times, there has been renewed interest in the topics of ‘ilm al-kalām, but there are a few topics that Muslims can actually deal with. Of course, there was little interest from Muslim researchers. Among them, the topics that Muslims are interested in modern times are the topics of life, in the afterlife, and the prophecy. Because Muslims rely on the Quranic text, they refer to the Quran and Sunnah texts more often than intellectual studies.
Today, the issue of the afterlife has become more complicated for Muslims. Therefore, we would like to look into the evolution of ‘ilm al-kalām in Islam, the differences between classical eschatology and modern eschatology, and what issues are related to eschatology among modern Muslims. The rewards and punishments of the afterlife for Muslims actions in this world have formed various religious discourses among Muslim scholars.
One of the reasons is that the Quran does not contain detailed information about eschatology. As a result, discussions about death and the afterlife among modern Muslims contain different narratives, and Arab Muslims today also mention different facts about the signs of the end of the world. Moreover, as the words “martyrdom” and “Muslim Jannah” have been plastered in the media in Islamic countries over the past few years, Muslim thinkers are pointing out problems with the fundamentalist rationality of Arab Muslims. Jannah is the place in the afterlife, where material and non-material circumstances are good and the mind is at peace.
‘ilm al-kalām of Ash’ari Muslims were limited to doctrines and beliefs, so they were relegated to “creeds,” and Arab Muslims relatively lacked interest in the ethical, social, and historical aspects of religion. Salafis, who were most popular among Arab Muslims after the Arab spring, strongly opposed ‘ilm al-kalām, even thought today they have started to show interest again in the old topics of ‘ilm al-kalām, which has been given little interest from Muslim researchers.
