박생광 채색화의 색채표현 연구 = A study of color in the work of Saengkwang Park

국문 초록 (Abstract)

박생광은 민족적 소재와 색을 차용하여 자신만의 채색화 화풍을 구축하고 연
구해온 근현대 작가이다. 그는 일본유학을 통해 일본식 근대 회화를 습득하고
해방 후 한국으로 돌아왔지만 당시 척색주의(斥色主義)로 경도된 사회적 시선
에 의해 화단에서 배척되었다. 하지만 1970년대 후반부터 단청, 무속신앙, 불
교, 역사 등의 민족적 소재를 한국의 색을 통해 작품으로 풀어나갔으며 한국
채색화의 성립과 새로운 방향성을 제시하였다.
우리나라는 일제 강점기와 한국전쟁을 거치며 경제발전과 문화운동을 숙제로
가지고 있었다. 또한 서양문화의 유입으로부터 우리의 고유문화를 고수하고 발
전시키기 위해 70년대 미술계에는 다양한 변화들이 등장하였다. 수묵화 운동은
추상적 요소를 수용하였으며 서양화는 한국적 소재를 얻어 발전한 반면 채색
화만큼은 왜색이 짙은 작품이라 하여 배척 되었다. 이러한 시대상황에서 박생
광의 작품이 주목을 받게 된 이유는 그가 작품으로 승화시킨 한국의 색에 대한 이해 때문이다. 박생광은 역사의 흐름에서 배재되어 온 색채를 그의 작품에
선명한 원색적 색감으로 표현 하였으며 이 과정에서 음양오행사상에 근본을
둔 오방색을 차용하였다.
오방색은 흑, 적, 청, 백, 황을 지칭하며 음양오행사상이 풀어낸 섞임이 없는
순수한 색을 의미한다. 우리나라에서는 이 다섯 색을 기본으로 하여 의식주(衣
食住)는 물론이고 삶에 필요한 모든 것들에 오방색을 사용해 왔다. 박생광은
이러한 한국적 색감을 민족적인 소재를 통해 재해석하였으며, 청년시절 습득한
근대적 조형성이 내포되어 그만의 조형언어를 구축하였다. 즉, 채색화를 일본
화의 범주에 두고 배척하기만 한 것이 아니라 일제 강점기 이전에 우리가 쌓
아온 채색화의 근간들을 연구하고 차용하여 한국인의 감성을 풍부하게 드러냈
다.
박생광의 후기작품에 해당하는 1980년대의 작품들을 살펴보면 각각의 회화작
품에는 오방색과 녹색, 주황색, 보라색의 8가지의 색채가 주로 사용되었다. 인
간의 심리와도 연결되어 있는 8가지 색채는 박생광의 작품을 통해 한국적 감
성과 적절하게 융화 되었다. 박생광은 작품의 소재를 서민들의 삶과 연결된 민
족, 종교, 역사에서 찾아 이와 결부된 한국적 색감은 서민들의 의식과 적절하
게 부합되었다. 원시적인 색감은 본질에 더 가까이 다가갔으며, 이는 우리에게
친근감과 불안감을 동시에 느끼게 하였다.
박생광이 후기에 사용한 이 색채들은 시각을 자극하는 기본적인 빛의 색이다.
이 색들은 아주 오랫동안 우리의 인식 속에서 여러 의미를 두고 사용되었고
박생광은 이점을 간파하여 작품으로 승화하였다. 이 때문에 박생광의 작업은
진정성이 내포되어 친밀하면서도 불편하게 다가 왔으며 한국 회화사 안에 중
요한 위치를 차지하게 되었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Park, Saengkwang is a modern painter who has studied and established
his own unique painting style by adopting Korean traditional materials
and colors. When he returned to Korea after Liberation of Korea from
study in Japan where he learned Japanese modern painting, he was
excluded from painting circle due to cold eyes of the society which was
inclined to 'Color Exclusionism (斥色主義)' of the time. And yet, from
late 1970s, he applied traditional Korean ethnic materials such as
Dancheong (丹靑, traditional multicolored paintwork on wooden
buildings), Shamanistic beliefs, Buddhism and history and presented new
direction for the establishment of Korean color painting.
Through the tumultuous historical period of Japanese Colonial Occupation
and the Korean War, Korea had its mission for economic development
and cultural enlightenment movement. In addition, to preserve unique
traditional Korean culture from the inflow of Western culture, various changes appeared in the painting community in the 1970s. While
Ink-and-wash painting (水墨畵) movement adopted abstract factors and
Western painting developed with materials of Korean tradition, colored
painting was ostracized with the reason of its connection with the
Japanese style. Under these historical circumstances, the reason why
Park, Saengkwang's works attracted attention was none other than his
understanding on colors of Korea he sublimated into his works of art.
Park expressed colors excluded from the current of history in raw
primary color tones and, in the process, adopted O-Bang-Saek (五方色:
colors designated in 5 directions) based on ideology of Yin-yang & Five
Elements (陰陽五行說) of Oriental philosophy.
O-Bang-Saek (五方色) are pure colors of black, red, blue, white and
yellow without mixture in the ideology of Yin-yang & Five Elements
(陰陽五行說). Korean people have used these 5 colors of O-Bang-Saek
in almost all things in life including food, clothing, and shelter
(衣食住). Park reinterpreted these Korean colors through traditional
ethnic Korean materials and established his own unique formative
language by adding modern formative nature he acquired while he was a
young adult. That is, he did not discriminate against colored painting as
painting belong to Japanese painting but expressed Korean emotions
abundantly by studying and adopting colored painting which Koreans had
accumulated even before Japanese occupied and annexed Korea by brutal
force.
Park, Saengkwang's later painting works in 1980s mainly used 8 colors
which are green, orange and purple in addition to O-Bang-Saek. These 8
colors which are also connected with human psychology were
appropriately harmonized in Park's works. Park found his subject matters
in ethnicity, religion and history related to the life of ordinary people
and related Korean color tones properly corresponded with conscious of
people. Primitive colors approached closer to the essence, which has
made us feel at once familiar and uneasy at the same time.
These colors Park used in his later years are colors of basic light
stimulating sense of sight. These colors have been used with various
meanings in our consciousness for a long time. Park saw this through
and sublimated into his works of art. For this reason, works of Park
approached us in familiar and uncomfortable way simultaneously with
genuineness inside and they came to occupy important place in the
history of Korean painting.
