당뇨환자의 대체요법 이용실태 및 관련요인 = A Study on Utilization of Alternative Therapies and Related Factors Among Patients with Diabetes Mellitus

Background: Diabetes Mellitus was characterized as a difficult disease to cure and long-standing. The patients with diabetes mellitus take various types of the treatment-seeking behaviors including using of alternative therapies throughout their disease process. This study was conducted to examine utilization of alternative therapies and understand factors related to use of alternative therapies among patients with diabetes mellitus.
Methods: This study used the methodological triangulation. In the first, the factors related to alternative therapies were described based on qualitative data collected from in-depth interviews with 20 patients with diabetes mellitus. Next, they were tested using quantitative data collected from a structured questionnaire and interviews involving 134 patients with statistical method.
Results: Sixty two point seven percent of subjects had experience of using alternative therapies and 46.0% were still using alternative therapies. On the average the patients used alternative therapies for 42.3 months and they paid 231,000 Won per month for alternative therapies. Factors related to use of alternative therapy were social group influence about alternative therapy, secrecy about alternative therapies to doctor, doctor's approval, and who decide on the use of alternative therapy, Seeking to use another alternative therapies. These variables in the alternative therapy group were statistically different from those of the hospital treatment only group.
Conclusion: The results from this study can help healthcare personnel understand the education needs of diabetes patients regarding using alternative therapies, and hence aid in the development of educational strategies for patients with diabetes mellitus.
