This thesis examines the changes in social status system and the reorganization of daily lives in modern Korean society, and also examines how the social equality movement of butchers has been represented in literature.
Butchers were one of the lowest in social hierarchy since Chosun dynasty. In Chosun dynasty, where everyday lives were strictly restricted by the social status system, butchers were engaged in butchery and making waves from willows. They led destitute lives as a group low in social standing.
After the Gabo Reform of 1894, butchers were released from the social hierarchy as the status system was abolished. However, it took a long time for them to free themselves from the still-prevailing discrimination. People admitted the necessity of butchers, but since they still regarded butchers as a ‘social underdog,’ the discrimination in everyday lives were not at all improved. As butchers struggled with the social prejudice, the press, social and religious organizations including Independence Daily, Hwangsung Daily, and Independence Association started to debate with the injustice.
As the Reform intended to govern people with a modern legal system, butchers who once did not have the obligation of national service, were controlled under the country after the Reform. They were regulated by the Posa Rules; the Japanese imperialistic government separated butchery from selling of meats, and by taking over the power for managing butchery, they restricted butchers.
Butchers then formed Hyungpyongsa, an organization for their freedom from social hierarchy. The name Hyungpyongsa consists of balance (hyung), leveling (pyong), organization (sa), which means that all human beings are equal like a balance rod. It is a social equality movement began in 1923to protect the human rights of butchers, who had been despised for a long time. The movement was later influenced by the equality movement in Japan to some extent; however, it is to be considered in the context of the progress in people’s movement and social campaigns since the March 1st Independence Movement in 1919.
Supported by the press and other social organizations, Hyungpyongsa expanded to the extent of 12branches and 67 offices after one year of its establishment. However, due to the difference of opinions over methodology and ideology, the movement was split one year after it was founded. In addition, taking political lines with the socialists, it tended to focus more on the socialism movement after 1926 and tried to strengthen the organization and involve itself in the proletarian movements.
Being one of the most radical movements on the abolition of social hierarchy, the Hyungpyongsa movement is represented in modern Korean novels, e.g. Nakdongkang by Myunghee Cho, and The Sun and the Moon by Soonwon Hwang.
In Nakdongkang, members of Hyungpyongsa and other market people are depicted as quarreling with each other. It is a faithful representation of the reality of those days, describing the opposition between Hyungpyongsa and the common people. As education is regarded as the best way for butchers to overcome the social hierarchy, Rosa, a butcher’s daughter, has graduated from the College of Education and works as a teacher in elementary school in the novel. In fact, only education enables butcher’s children to let down the bars of prejudice on the social status system.
The issues on Hyungpyongsa and butchers are more clearly presented in The Sun and the Moon.
This novel represents the time after the social equality movement and reports the still-existing discrimination on butchers. No matter how the social status system has been abolished legally, the novel shows butchers are treated the same as a ‘social underdog’ in daily lives, which suggests that it is extremely difficult to completely abolish the feudal social status system even in modern everyday lives.
