Government Theory which was proposed by N. Chomsky neatly explains case-marking rules of most Indo-European Languages and provides basic theoretical background for the Core Grammar which has been pursued by many linguists since the advent of Transformation Grammar. In Chapter Ⅱ, various aspects of case assignment are discussed. Each case-form of most pronouns in English is phonetically distinct from any other case-form, whereas that of Korean is determined by case markers such as ---/ka/, ---/i/, ---/il/, ---/eke/ etc. As pronouns are noun phrases in English, case is the property of not only pronouns but also noun phrases in general. It is believed that different caseforms are appropriate to different NP-position in a sentence and thus NP's in English are assigned a case by virtue of their position.
Chapter Ⅲ deals with the difference between cyclic nodes and governing nodes. Though sentence was thought to be the sole node for the transformational rules to be applied cyclically, N. Chomsky proposed that the NP be included as a cyclic node as well. In the framework of Revised Extended Standard Theory, S-bar node is introduced according to the assumption that clause-introducing particles like that represent a complementiser constituent. Not only NP but also S-bar count as an absolute barrier to case-marking, and this barrier gives rise to the argument about Markedness in case assginment.
It seems plausible that both the Chomsky's rules and case-marking rules can handle the distribution of reciprocal, reflexive and personal pronouns with regard to their anaphoric relation. In Chapter Ⅳ, it is proposed that semantically-oriented case-marking rules override the syntactic rules in treating pronominal anaphors and eventually make the latter redundant.
To solve the baffling case assignment of the direct object in dative sentences, Chapter Ⅴ is devoted to the notion of the structural and inherent case. It is often suggested that Restructuring is desirable where there is some overt lexical material intervening between the governor and governee. This Chapter also criticizes these suggestions and tries to present a new approach to case assignment.
