색소포니스트 강태환의 즉흥연주기법에 대한 연구 : 곡 <20 Years Ago>를 중심으로 = A Study on the Analysis about Improvisation of Saxophonist Kang Tae Hwan : Focusing on the song <20 Years Ago>

The purpose of this study is to analyze and reveal the various techniques that appear in saxophonist Kang Tae Hwan's improvisation. To this end, a consideration of improvisation in various music, the birth of free jazz and free music, were presented as theoretical backgrounds. In addition, by analyzing his song <20 Years Ago(Part 1 & 2> in which his techniques are well displayed, the techniques appearing in his improvisation were identified and analyzed. The analysis results of the study are summarized as follows. First, it is the use of repetitive phrase, in Part 1 of <20 Years Ago> shows repetitive characteristics by continuously using perfect 5th and ostinato pattern. Second, Kang Tae Hwan’s glissando technique and overtone technique that appear during the play of the perfect 5th pattern and ostinato pattern in <Part 1> were identified and analyzed. Third, the use of microtone and multiphonics in long tone, which are the main element of Part 2, were represented and studied by spectrograms and sheet music. Also, Hauptton, which is a long tone, and the nebentons appearing around it, the hauptton technique in Kang Tae Hwan’s improvisation was identified and studied. Fourth, Kang Tae Hwan's technique of imitating a walking bass through the use of quarter note pulses and eighth note bounce rhythms was analyzed. This study analyzed Kang Tae Hwan's improvisation technique in <20 Years Ago (Part 1 & 2)>. Since academic research on free music and jazz musicians in Korea is insufficient, this analysis study of kang Tae Hwan, who has a global reputation as a korean, is inevitable. Also, by giving academic value to his music through the analysis of free improvisation, it can contribute to understanding his musical language about free music. Through subsequent studies, more of his techniques can be analyzed, and it is thought that it is possible to study the sound of the alto saxophone according to reed or embouchure. Through this thesis, I hope that the music and techniques of Kang Tae-hwan, a master of the free music will be highlighted and the academic research and interest in the domestic jazz and free music scene will increase.
