Through extensive research, the Gukjooryeui was completed as a state ritual manual that exemplified the unique characteristics of the Joseon dynasty. However, by the late Joseon period, changes in both domestic and international contexts led to the establishment of new rituals beyond those already formalized. This development allowed Joseon to accumulate its own distinctive rituals reflecting the altered circumstances. One prominent phenomenon demonstrating these characteristics was the merging of royal rituals with Jujagarye.
In the 10th year of King Hyeonjong’s reign, the royal ancestral ritual performed by the king and the crown prince at the Jongmyo Shrine was conducted with attributes of the Jujagarye, following Song Si-yeol’s suggestion. Later, during King Sookjong’s reign, the Spring and Autumn Ancestral Rite were established without the explicit intention of incorporating Jujagarye procedures during the organization process. However, they were ultimately influenced by the precedent set in the 10th year of King Hyeonjong’s reign, and the same influence applied in the organization of rites for the Myohyun ceremony. As with the example from the 10th year of King Hyeonjong’s reign, there were cases where Jujagarye was intentionally reflected in royal rituals. Still, there were also instances where certain attributes of Jujagarye were indirectly included due to precedents, even without explicit intent.
Due to the crown prince’s Jongmyo shrine ceremony established in the 10th year of King Hyeonjong’s reign, some procedures from the patriarchal Jujagarye were reflected in the royal rituals at Jongmyo, a state symbol bearing public attributes. Subsequently, the Jongmyo shrine ceremony and the Jongmyo Myohyun ceremony for the queen and crown princess, developed gradually afterward, came to embody a structure centered around the king while also incorporating a form that implied a patriarchal meaning.
