The Nihon Shoki, together with the Kojiki, both of which were compiled in the early 8th century, are examples of literature describing the history of early Japan. However, because these books, which begin with the age of myth, contain a myriad of examples of oral tradition and anecdotes, there are problems with categorizing them as true historical chronicles. At the same time, the Nihon Shoki Jingūki makes important references to Japan’s negotiations with other countries during the latter half of the fourth century. One of these is the dispatch of troops to the Korean kingdom of Silla in response to the requests of the Baekje—also a Korean kingdom—amongst other examples, while another is the gift of the seven-branched sword to a Japanese ruler from the king of Baekje. Prior to and during World War II, amidst rising nationalist trends, these references to the dispatch of troops came to be used as evidence of theories claiming that Japan controlled a broad area of the southern Korean Peninsula during this period of history.
Such nationalistic statements were severely criticized after World War II, and most postwar academic viewpoints rejected the idea that Japan sent troops to Silla and other locations in antiquity. Opinion differs greatly between Japanese and Korean researchers in particular regarding the question of the seven-branched sword. The debate centers on the following: whether or not the seven-branched sword was given to a Japanese ruler by the king of Baekje ; whether or not the inscription of the year noted on the sword corresponds to the year of Eastern Jin Dynasty Taihe Period 369; and whether or not the inscription represents the means of expressing years unique to Baekje.
The authors believe that the background to these to these discrepancies in opinion lies in the fact that the content of the Nihon Shoki Jingūki chronicles is not necessarily accurately perceived, as well as confusion between the Nihon Shoki itself and nationalistic interpretations of the document. In this connection, this paper analyzes the content as objectively as possible, referencing significant source criticism regarding the Jingūki section of the Nihon Shoki chronicles.
Our results indicate that Japan’s dispatch of troops to Silla and other locations was at the request of the kingdom of Baekje, and that this action did constitute military support for Baekje. In addition, our work indicates that the content of the Mimana Kōbōshi—a written work that tends toward nationalism—constitutes a distortion of the Nihon Shoki Jingūki chronicles, and that this misinterpretation has been broadly propagated. We have found that there are significant discrepancies between the Mimana Kōbōshi and the Nihon Shoki Jingūki chronicles. In addition, we did not identify evidence in the Jingūki chronicles to support the claim that Japan controlled a significant part of the southern Korean Peninsula at this stage in history.
Meanwhile, regarding the seven-branched sword, the authors are of the opinion that the sword was gifted by a son of King Chogo (King Geunchogo) to a ruler of the kingdom of Wa in commemoration of Baekje’s victory over Goguryeo with Japan’s military support. Therefore, we believe it is natural to conclude that the year noted in the inscription on the sword is the Eastern Jin Dynasty Taihe Period 369, in light of the relationship between the Korean kingdom of Baekje and the Japanese kingdom of Wa.
