The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the mentoring experience of dance majors on department adaptation and career preparation behavior. To solve this research purpose, 350 dance majors enrolled in four-year universities in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Chungnam, and Busan were sampled. Of these, 26 people who showed unfaithful responses were excluded from the analysis, and a total of 324 copies were used for the final data analysis. Exploratory factor analysis, reliability analysis, t-test, ANOVA, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were used to identify the gender, grade, major, dance experience, individual practice time, and the number of performances participated in the dance majors per year, and to identify the differences and influences of each variable of mentoring experience, department adaptation, and career preparation behavior. The results obtained through the above process are as follows.
First, there were statistically significant differences in mentoring experience in major, individual practice time, and the number of performances participated in a year. Gender, major, individual practice time, and the number of performances participated in a year showed statistically significant differences in department adaptation and career preparation behavior in terms of gender, major, individual practice time, and the number of performances participated in a year.
Second, both the role model, social support, and performance guidance, which are subvariables of mentoring experience, were found to have a positive effect on environmental adaptation and peer adaptation, which are subvariables of departmental adaptation, and they were also found to have a positive effect on learning adaptation.
Third, it was found that both the role model and social support and performance guidance of the subvariables of mentoring experience had a positive effect on career exploration and information gathering activities among the subvariables of career preparation behavior.
Fourth, it was found that environmental adaptation, peer adaptation, and learning adaptation, all sub-variables of department adaptation, had a positive effect on career exploration activities, and environmental adaptation and learning adaptation had a positive effect on information collection activities.
The conclusions obtained from the above research results are as follows.
First, since the mentoring of dance majors is mainly done in department spaces such as lecture rooms and practice rooms, the dance guidance and support of mentors such as leaders, colleagues, seniors, and juniors who are members of the department can properly solve various problems arising from their studies, so that interpersonal relationships formed within the department can be smoothly discussed and supported together to help dance students establish themselves as members of the department.
Second, students majoring in dance should help them decide their career path with help from mentors in preparing for their career paths. In other words, efforts to organize mentors of various occupational groups are needed to help dance majors access various jobs, and mentors should also grasp the field situation of various occupations. Therefore, mentors should provide necessary job information about the career path that dance majors aim for, and dance majors should strive to form a specific behavioral system for their career path.
Third, academic problem solving using the facilities established in the department improves dance knowledge and competence through the help of department members, and actually prepares them suitable for their career path. Therefore, the department should help dance students identify their target occupations and collect relevant information, and efforts to present academic problems are needed to equip them with the appropriate skills.
Finally, this study is expected to provide basic data necessary for dance majors to solve and develop their career concerns, the need for mentoring experiences, the importance of departmental adaptation, and preparation for career paths.
