This study focused on < Martyrs > Bill Viola installed in London in 2014. Viola’s artistic research for time and space at Media Art was expressed as martyrdom at this work.
Nevertheless, contemporary media criticism pays keen attention to the fact that the < Martyrs > permanently installed in the north of the Cathedral’s high altar invites the observers’ eyes to the time of quiet meditation to make them float on the boundary between the meaning of martyrdom and its beauty.
This study takes one more step in to explore the questions about the root of human being at Media Art focusing on Bill Viola’s < Martyrs >. even if Viola caused controversy over the mutual interrelation between the form of installation and the concept of time to Heinrich Klotz and Hans Belting, the slowly flowing images in 4 width screen of his < Martyrs > installed in the high altar of the physical Cathedral changes the methods and conditions of accepting martyrs.
As an artistic objet commonly appearing in the world of Viola’s artwork, the four elements of nature (soil, air, fire and water) that is a tool of embodying human bodies are contemplated in the Catholic church, the place for the ritual of worship, and it provides deep signification about the space at Media Art. The Martyrs by Viola reproduced in four rectangular plasma-screen differently highlights the temporality of Martyrs as the martyrdom of the earth, air, water and fire appear in a different way through the fabricated time. The fabricated temporality and architectural spatiality for Viola are the methods of embodying artistic martyrdom, and the death and life at Media Art is not relative dualism, but the condition of analyzing the original questions about human existence.
As Viola clarified at his interview, his < Martyrs > makes us, the observers closely approach the finitude of our lives in a meditative way by making the martyrdom embodied with human bodies that was impossible at the religion art. As the images of martyrdom embodied with human bodies are expressed with inessential imaginary space and technical temporality, the aesthetic categories about death changes. In other words, as the temporality of Media Art can be materialized with human bodies, our lives are subject to be under the control of time. for this reason, there is no choice but to admit that video is a suitable medium to express the image of martyrdom.
Viola’s < Martyrs-the earth, air, fire and water >(2014) allows us to experience the transcendence of space and time at Media Art visually, meditatively and unconsciously.
Even though the four natural elements required the four human bodies and the human body materializing death appearing in plasma-screen changed the religious sacrificial space into artistic space, the martyrs on the four screens of the media lead our attention to the extremely slowly fabricated images to make the effect of self-love deepen. while the cyber space at Media Art is materialized conceptually and environmentally, the image of martyrdom is quite artistic, technical, religious and modern.
Viola’s < Martyrs > advances toward the root of human existence through the martyrdom that is embodied with human bodies. this work awakes us to a sense of universal truth that the value of life after we accept the death is materialized with self-sacrifice. the technical temporality and artistic extensity and esthetic values of transcendence at Media Art should remain only in the hands of Viola’s < Martyrs >(2014). The four types of martyrdom and its esthetic revelation methods should be materialized in anthropological questions that were ruled out in the East-and-West traditional arts.
