한국·일본·대만 중학교 영어교과서의 문화내용 분석

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

To learn a foreign language is to understand the culture of the society where it is spoken. This means that language and culture have been inseparably related to each other and they have developed mutual influences with each other. For the purpose of meaningful communication, the primary importance falls on the understanding of socio-cultural background of the target language. This means that the ultimate goal of language education is realized only after the culture of the target language is fully understood.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the cultural contents currently used in middle school English textbooks of Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. For this study, eighteen textbooks published by three Asian countries, all used in the middle school are analyzed from the view point of a cultural diversity. The sources for the analysis are the dialogue and the reading sections in the textbooks.
The text analysis is done in accordance with three criteria:
1) cultural materials and contents reflected on the middle school English textbooks of the three countries in the spirit of the 7th Korean National Education Course
2) the cultural types such as material, behavioral and spiritual culture based on the items suggested by Castain and Finocchiaro & Bonomo
3) the native culture of each country-Korea, Japanese, Taiwanese (& British-American)
The result of this study suggests that English textbook contents should show similarities and differences between British-American culture and each native cultures by using culture capsule and culture assimilation. It also suggests balanced distribution of each of the cultural backgrounds by more effective cultural understanding in English education. It means that more various cultural patterns are needed to be included in the textbooks so that more balanced cultural education can be possible. Moreover, the cultural information which coincides with the interests and the intellectual development of the students should stimulate their conscious motivation. English textbook that contain adequate cultural materials are able to make good progress for effective English education.
