Purpose: In the maritime environment, unlike on land where the use of period communication networks is severely limited, sharing information about emergency patients is difficult. Due to longer patient transfer times at sea compared to on land, timely on-site treatment is crucial via the exchange of patient information. This study aims to explore strategies for sharing information to improve the survival rate of emergency patients by promptly transferring them to appropriate hospitals when emergencies occur in the maritime environment, sharing patient status, treatment records, and transfer information with the Maritime Police Agency and relevant organizations.
Method: In this study, we utilized LoRa communication to receive, store, and transmit emergency patient information classified by an electronic triage tag in a smartphone app. The transmitted emergency patient information was implemented to be collected in real-time through a hybrid triage system along with LoRa receivers, with the setup simulating situations where internet communication is not feasible. Distance-based receiving points were set up to verify whether emergency patient information was successfully transmitted and received through the hybrid triage system.
Results: Experimental results showed that in the absence of internet connectivity, the smartphone app transmitted emergency patient information to the hybrid tag via NFC communication. The hybrid tag then stored the received emergency patient information in its internal memory and transmitted it to the receiver via the LoRa communication module. Through the hybrid triage system, we could confirm the reception of emergency patient information or delayed reception depending on the distance. Most data were received when the distance was short, whereas data reception was not successful when the distance was relatively far.
Conclusion: In mass disaster scenarios where internet communication is unavailable, it was possible to swiftly and accurately identify casualty information at disaster sites using self-networking methods like LoRa communication, enabling appropriate disaster response. However, we also recognized limitations inherent to communication methods. Further research is required to explore various communication methods for collecting emergency patient information and transferring them to appropriate hospitals in situations where internet communication is unavailable.
