Kim Hajong (金夏鍾, 1793- after 1878; sobriquet, Yudang) is a prominent painter, who showed his unique painting style while originating in the styles of hwawon (court painters) in the 19th century of the Joseon dynasty. There are two painting albums, called Haesando-cheop (海山圖帖) and Pungak-gwon (楓嶽卷), as well as two landscape paintings of the Southern School remaining as his legacy today. Among those, Haesando-cheop (1815) and Pungak-gwon (1865) are both real-scenery landscape painting albums with 25 and 64 pieces respectively, showing scenic landscape of Pocheon in Gyeonggi province; Cheorwon, Geumhwa, and Hoeyang in Gangwon province; Mt. Geumgang and eight scenic spots of Kwandong area; and the regions of Mt. Seorak.
What’s intriguing is that the two albums have different painting styles while both depicting the same place, Mt. Geumgang. It is because they were commissioned by patrons, both Gyeonghwasejok (upper-class aristocrats), but having different preference for studies. In addition, as there is a gap of fifty years between the two albums, the two would help to identify the early and late painting styles of Kim Hajong. Pungak-gwon, in particular, is highly appreciated as the masterpiece of the real-scenery landscape paintings in the 19th century as it boasts of its largest size among the existing painting albums, not imitating the painting style of Kim Hong-do. Therefore, Kim Hajong’s excellent painting skills, well reflected in this painting album, would drive much attention.
In the previous studies on Kim Hajong’s real-scenery landscape paintings, the paintings analyzed had limited subject matters as the studies focused mainly on their influential relationship with the style of Kim Hong-do, which prevailed in the 19th century. In this regard, it was difficult to figure out every aspect of Kim Hajong’s real-scenery landscape paintings and insufficient to compare and analyze patterns and characteristics of the two painting albums. Therefore, this paper emphasized his real-scenery landscape paintings with new subjects, unknown to the public, and looked closely into patrons’ perspectives on his paintings and studies, and patterns and characteristics of the two painting albums. By doing so, this research aims to suggest what Kim Hajong meant to the art history as he broadened the public view and introduced a new side of the painting circles as a member of hwawon in the late 19th century.
Real-scenery landscape paintings in the 19th century continued the traveling tradition through which literati enjoyed or shared excursion records with others and had social relationship. In addition, with an influence of schools, such as evidential learning (kaozhengxu, 考證學) and empirical learning (puxue, 樸學), introduced from the Qing dynasty, such paintings were more likely to be made in the form of combining poems, lengthy pieces of travel diaries and real-landscape paintings altogether. Against such historical and cultural backdrop, Kim Hajong was commissioned by two members of Gyeonghwasejok, Yi Gwang-mun (1778-1838; sobriquet, Sohwa) and Yi Yu-won (1814-1888; sobriquet, Gyulsan) and completed Haesando-cheop and Pungak-gwon. He was commissioned by politically influential patrons, Gyeonghwasejok, since he was a hwawon of the Kaesong Kim clan who dominated the painting circles in the late Joseon dynasty and highly recognized for his excellent skills in landscape painting.
In his painting, Haesando-cheop, he added many elements reflecting the actual traveling scenes, and by doing so, he enhanced his painting style of vividly depicting the real scenery and reinterpreting it. Also, it is a masterpiece which showed Kim’s painting skills to the fullest while considering the perspectives of his patron, Yi Gwang-mun, who traveled Mt. Geumgang and Seorak together, valuing actuality and realism of the scenes. However, in his other album, Pungak-gwon, there are evidences showing that he referred to Haesando-cheop as well as traditional painting styles of the predecessors in the Kaesong Kim clan or the 18th century. It is because Kim well understood the purpose of his patron, Yi Yu-won, and his preference for evidential and empirical learnings when requesting Kim Hajong to draw Pungak-gwon.
Kim Hajong was not a mere passive painter who simply drew the scenery, rather an active painter who drew the real-scenery landscape by understanding his patrons’ purpose and reflecting the overall context. Also, he made a remarkable progress in the art history as he showed more proactive painting styles by moving away from the previous trend of painting the limited regions and embracing new subject matters of painting. This study offers relevant implications as it integrates research results on Kim Hajong and analyzes his early and late painting styles based on the two different patrons, painting patterns and characteristics in the historical and cultural context of the 19th century.
