Since the first thin-film transistor utilized in display backplane, this industry is flourished in every aspect of applications possible and still continuously evolving. From bulky low resolution to thin and light large flat panel high-resolution displays are now dominating the market in TV, computer, mobile displays. The flexible (foldable, rollable, and stretchable) displays which were just a concept a decade ago are now already in use of modern smartphones and wearable sensors. The secret behind this tremendous growth of the thin-film industry is simply the extensive researches on active materials and optimization of electronic devices. Oxide semiconductors and low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) are now dominating the display industry as the main choice of active materials providing good electrical characteristics and stability. However, long time operation and under stress conditions especially under mechanical stress, TFTs exhibit severe instabilities which should be well understood and improved. The analysis of the density of states (defect states) is very crucial to understand the instabilities within the materials which can be determined using experiments and technology computer-aided design (TCAD). However, the experiments are often very expensive and time-consuming, while TCAD based defect modeling is comparatively efficient and accurate. In this study, different stress conditions and process specific instabilities in oxide semiconductors and LTPS TFTs are discussed and modeled by TCAD simulation. Defects in sprayed zinc oxide (ZnO), effects of grain boundary, and protrusion in LTPS upon laser crystallization and mechanical folding induced electrical degradation in p-type LTPS TFTs are extensively discussed and modeled with TCAD.
