재한 중국인 여성 대학원생의 유학생활과 실존적 경험에 대한 내러티브 탐구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 한국에서 유학 중이거나 유학을 마친 중국인 여성 대학원생들의 내러티브를 통해, 그들이 겪은 실존적 경험과 정체성과 주체성 변화를 탐색하고자 하였다. 여성, 중국인, 유학생이라는 교차적 정체성을 지닌 이들이 타인의 계획 속에서 시작한 유학의 여정을 어떻게 자기 선택의 이야기로 전환해 나갔는지를 조명하였다. 연구 참여자는 모두 중국 국적의 여성 대학원생 4명으로, 2명은 박사과정 중이며, 1명은 박사 졸업생, 1명은 석사 졸업생으로 구성되었다. 2024년 1월부터 2025년 1월까지 약 1년에 걸쳐 총 2~3회씩의 반구조화된 심층면담을 실시하였으며, 클란디닌과 코넬리(2000)의 3차원적 내러티브 탐구 틀을 바탕으로 자료를 분석하였다. 전사 자료에 대해 개방코딩과 축코딩을 수행하고, 내러티브적 맥락 안에서 주제별 의미를 도출하였다.

연구 결과, 첫째, 참여자들은 유학을 대체로 가족, 특히 아버지의 결정에 의해 시작하였으며, 초기에는 타인의 계획 속에서 출발하였으나 점차 자기 해석과 선택의 과정을 통해 주체적 여정으로 전환해 나갔다. 둘째, 유학생활 초기에는 언어 장벽과 말하기의 어려움으로 인해 존재 축소와 침묵을 경험했지만, 각자의 실천 전략을 통해 한국어를 자기 언어로 전환하며 주체성을 회복해 나갔다. 셋째, 학술 글쓰기 과정에서는 언어적 한계, 권력 관계, 신체적 스트레스가 복합적으로 나타났으나, 참여자들은 이를 자기표현과 회복의 계기로 전환시키며 글쓰기 안에서 자아를 재구성하였다. 넷째, 대학원 진학 과정에서는 부모의 반대와 가부장적 통제에 맞선 실존적 결단이 이루어졌고, 참여자들은 설득과 협상의 전략을 통해 자기 삶의 방향을 능동적으로 모색하였다. 다섯째, 한국 사회에서의 신체적 타자화와 성적 대상화는 여성, 중국인, 유학생이라는 교차적 정체성과 맞물려 나타났으며, 이에 대한 대응과 저항은 이들이 주체로 나아가는 실천으로 드러났다. 여섯째, 유학 경험은 결혼, 소비, 진로, 독립에 대한 가치관의 전환을 이끌어냈고, 참여자들은 타인의 기준이 아닌 자신의 언어와 선택으로 삶을 설계해 나가는 존재로 변화하였다.

이러한 결과는 실존주의 페미니즘의 관점에서, 중국인 여성 대학원생들의 유학 경험이 ‘타자에서 주체로 변화’라는 실존적 전환 과정을 어떻게 구체적으로 구현하는지를 보여준다. 참여자들은 초기에는 부모의 결정에 의해 삶의 방향이 결정되는 제한된 현실에 있었지만, 점차 삶의 의미를 재구성하고 실존적 책임을 자각해 나갔으며, 성별 기대와 사회적 규범에 대응하며 삶의 가능성을 확장해 나갔다. 또한 성적 대상화와 신체의 타자화라는 억압적인 경험조차 실천을 통해 주체적 대응의 계기로 전환시키며, 유학이라는 공간을 자기 삶을 해석하고 재구성해가는 실존적 실천의 장으로 만들어 나갔다.

교육적 논의로서, 본 연구는 유학 경험이 여성에게 기존 삶의 질서와 규범을 성찰하게 하고, 억압된 경험을 자기 언어로 해석하며, 삶의 방향을 새롭게 구성하는 실존적 기회를 제공함을 보여준다. 유학은 중국인 여성 유학생들에게 말하지 못했던 침묵을 해체하고 존재의 회복을 가능하게 하는 해방적 교육의 장이었으며, 결혼, 진로, 소비, 독립 등 삶의 핵심 가치를 재구성하는 가능성의 공간으로 작용하였다. 따라서 여성 유학생을 위한 교육은 지식 전달을 넘어 존재를 묻고 재해석할 수 있도록 돕는 실존적 기반 위에 구성되어야 하며, 젠더 감수성을 바탕으로 한 안전하고 해방적인 교육 환경 마련이 필요하다.
본 연구는 중국인 여성 대학원생의 유학 경험을 실존주의 페미니즘 관점에서 조명함으로써, 중국인 여성 유학생의 삶과 인식 변화에 대한 깊은 이해를 도모하였다. 이를 바탕으로 향후 다양한 국적과 전공, 학위과정을 지닌 외국인 여성 유학생을 대상으로 한 질적 연구가 지속될 필요가 있으며, 젠더 감수성을 반영한 유학생 지원 정책과 제도 설계에 대한 실천적 논의도 확장되어야 한다. 특히 여성 유학생의 경험을 중심에 둔 연구는 한국 고등교육의 포용성과 다양성 확보를 위한 중요한 기초자료로 될 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study explores the existential experiences and transformations in identity and subjectivity of Chinese female graduate students who are currently studying or have studied in South Korea, through their personal narratives. Focusing on women who embody the intersecting identities of being female, Chinese, and international students, this research investigates how they transitioned from study abroad journeys initiated by others’ plans to narratives of autonomous choice. The participants consisted of four Chinese female graduate students: two current doctoral students, one doctoral graduate, and one master’s graduate. From January 2024 to January 2025, Two to three rounds of semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted over the course of one year. Data were analyzed based on Clandinin and Connelly’s (2000) three-dimensional narrative inquiry framework. Open and axial coding were performed on the interview transcripts to identify key themes within their narrative contexts.
The findings revealed the following: First, most participants began their study abroad experience due to family decisions, particularly Those of their fathers, but gradually reinterpreted and reclaimed their journeys through autonomous decision-making. Second, in the early stages of their lives in Korea, participants experienced silence and diminished presence due to language barriers and speaking anxiety. However, through various strategies, they transformed Korean into a personal means of expression, thereby reclaiming their subjectivity. Third, during the academic writing process, they encountered compounded challenges of linguistic limitations, power dynamics, and physical stress. Nevertheless, they reinterpreted writing as a site of self-expression and reconfigured their identities through it. Fourth, in pursuing graduate studies, participants made existential decisions against patriarchal control and parental opposition, actively seeking the direction of their lives through persuasion and negotiation. Fifth, experiences of bodily othering and sexual objectification in Korean society emerged at the intersection of gender, nationality, and international student status. Their responses and resistance to these experiences were expressed as acts of subjectivity. Sixth, the study abroad experience led to value transformations regarding marriage, consumption, career, and independence. Participants shifted from living according to others’ standards to designing their lives through their own voices and choices.
From the perspective of existentialist feminism, these findings illustrate how the study abroad experiences of Chinese female graduate students concretely embody the existential transformation “from Other to Subject.” Although initially placed in a constrained reality where life decisions were made by others, they gradually reconstructed the meaning of their lives and came to recognize their existential responsibility. Responding to gendered expectations and social norms, they expanded the possibilities of their existence. Even oppressive experiences such as sexual objectification and bodily alienation were transformed into acts of subjectivity through practice, making the space of study abroad a site for existential engagement and reinterpretation of life.
In terms of educational implications, this study demonstrates that studying abroad provides women with opportunities to critically reflect on the normative order of their lives, reinterpret suppressed experiences in their own language, and reconstruct the direction of their existence. For these Chinese female students, studying abroad dismantled imposed silence and enabled the recovery of their being, functioning as a liberating educational space where core values such as marriage, career, consumption, and independence were renegotiated. Therefore, education for female international students should be grounded in existential inquiry that supports self-reflection and redefinition of being, and should ensure a safe and emancipatory environment based on gender sensitivity.
By illuminating the study abroad experiences of Chinese female graduate students through the lens of existentialist feminism, this study offers an in-depth understanding of the shifts in their lives and consciousness. It calls for continued qualitative research involving international female students from diverse nationalities, academic disciplines, and degree levels, as well as for practical discussions on student support systems and institutional policies informed by gender sensitivity. In particular, research centered on the experiences of female international students can serve as a crucial foundation for enhancing inclusivity and diversity in Korean higher education.
