‘爐 (stove, furnace)’ refers to all apparatuses used to burn and has been called by various names based on material and usage. However, as for the bronze brazier housed in Koryo Museum in Gaeseong, North Korea among Goryeo Dynasty braziers existing today, literatures specifically indicate it as ‘火爐 (brazier)’ by clarifying that a brazier is an object with washbasin-like body with large opening and the attachment of lion head style or beast style legs.
Compared with the ancient braziers that are considered as utensils for warming and dietary life, the brazier of the Goryeo Dynasty also served special purposes such as the preparation of teas and rituals in addition to the function of warming. As for such special usages of the brazier during the Goryoe Dynasty, the role and components of braziers used to heat liquid can be found in the rituals and cultures relating to tea drinking through the paintings of China and Joseon. Braziers were also used to eliminate impurities during Confucian rituals and used in the Buddhist performance of burning offerings and other rituals as the ritual utensil.
The Goryeo Dyansty brazier is characterized by the opening with flat disk, wash basin style body, and three separately cast legs connected to the body. This three-leg style braziers were divided by the style of the legs into the lion head style which decorated the leg with the lion’s head and the beast leg style of which the ends of the legs resemble the feet of an animal.
While most lion head style braziers of the Goryeo Dynasty which connected the legs to the body with rivets had three legs, the brazier housed in Koryo Museum in Gaeseong, North Korea exceptionally has four legs, and it was deemed that the brazier is the largest lion head style brazier found and an additional leg was placed to support the weight of the body. The lion head style incense burner leg housed in Cheongju National Museum, which had been regarded as a leg of a bronze incense burner, was re-classified as a brazier leg due to its similarity with the line head style relics from the Goryeo Dynasty. The influences on these lion head style braziers of the Goryeo Dynasty can be traced from the multi-facial expressions depicting the leg muscles of the lion and other detailed ornamental expressions in the artworks with ornamental lion style legs from preceding era. In addition, they are estimated to have been produced in the 10th century based on the mural paintings during the Liao Dynasty and “Xuanhe fengshi Gaoli Tujing (Illustrated Account of an Official Mission to Korea during the Xuanhe Reign)” and became popular in Goryeo at least from the 12th to the 13th century. However, the sense of volume in the lion ornaments became relatively simpler, and it began to show changes in terms of format and size from the 13th century. These formative characteristics of Goryeo Dynasty lion head style braziers were handed down to the lion head style braziers of the Joseon Dynasty.
As for cases where the place of excavation of Goryeo Dyansty brazier are known, they are divided into sand land and sea area. Particularly, the Goryeo Dynasty beast face brazier was very popular in Goryeo in so much that it was not only used in temples but also by crewmen. As a type of braziers that represent the times, it reaffirmed the advanced craft art and metal craft culture which had flourished so much that outstanding sculptural beauty could be found even in ordinary craftwork for everyday living. It is also deemed that the lion head style brazier of the Goryeo Dyansty developed excellent formative decorativeness and artistry through the incorporation of its function relating to tea culture in addition to the function of keeping warmth.
The Goryeo Dyansty brazier with beast legs has overall simple shape and the legs are constructed in ’S’ shape, thinner and slender that those of lion head style brazier, and the ends of the legs took the hoof shape of an animal. These beast legs are very similar to the artworks with beast legs of the Unified Silla Dynasty and the brazier with beast legs excavated in Dobongsaewon School, which indicate that it inherited the tradition of Unified Silla. In addition, the brazier excavated in Dobongsaewon School is considered as an instrument for Buddhist service used in the early Goryeo Dynasty based on the excavated site and artifacts excavated with the brazier and as an ancient form which followed the tradition of the Unified Silla. However, since there are not many brazier with beast legs remaining, it is deemed that the burnt offering was quite rare in Korea compared with incense offering and not many of them were made.
Lastly, it is deemed based on the Goryeo Dynasty brazier that the metal craft culture of Goryeo had not been confined to the royal family and Buddhism but had been enjoyed in ordinary life and could develop up to a high level, in so much that even crewmen could use highly ornamental lion head style braziers.
