This paper is to elucidate the relationship between Conrad and Plath's literature and suicide by analyzing the motive and situation of their sulcide attempts, and by investigating how they are reflected in their works.
The situation of Conrad's suicide attempt reflects a profound ambivalence: a wish to live and wish to die. His suicide attempt represents the wish to kill his uncle. In addiction to, the suicide attempt may be to Conrad the supreme self-test, an act that challenged his courage, imagination, and determination. Thus the overriding objective in suicide is Conrad's attempt to liberate himself from his uncle and Poland's dominance, and then to jump to the new world.
That Jim himself appears before Doramin disarmed represents his unconscious wish to kill him. This is similar to one of the motives of Conrad's suicide attempt. As Jim's death liberates Conrad from his guilt complex resulting from his desertion, so does Conrad's suicide attempt liberate him from his uncle and jump him to the new World. Plath is a perfectionist who tries to do well in her role as a student, writer, wife and mother. According to psychoanalysts, 'a man may destroy himself not because he wants to die, but because there is a single aspect of himself which he cannot tolerate. A suicide of this order is the act of a perfectionist.' Thus her suicide may result from her pefect personality.
The situation of her suicide is a kind of cry for help. There is also an aggressive element within her suicide. Her suicide is a revolt against patriarchal authority, which is restraining the female talent, and a representation of desire to kill her father and husband. The repeated suicides of the female narrator in "Lady Lazarus" represent her wish, which is to kill her old self at the mercy of the male's power and to accomplish her new creative self. This likewise reflects the motive of Plath's suicide. In conclusion, what she wanted in her suicide is for the birth of her new creative self through self-purification in suffering.
