What is a writing system[文字]? A writing system is often defined as “a visual marker representing the communication system of the spoken language (i.e., spoken language).” The ‘writing system’ formed in this way represents the ‘language’ of human beings as the unity of ‘writing’ and ‘letters.’ According to the typological characteristics of languages, the research considered that humankind has searched for a suitable writing system for each language. As an isolated language, Chinese adopted ‘Chinese characters,’ not far from the hieroglyphic system, and has been operating the writing system continuously for thousands of years. Semitic languages such as Arabic, which are inflectional words of consonant roots, have accumulated their language knowledge for thousands of years since applying the Abjad, a consonant script. In languages that use agglutinative languages, the situation is a little different. Sumerian speakers, who first used hieroglyphs in human history, have gradually changed the way they use letters from hieroglyphs to word letters and from word letters to phonetic letters to express their language, which is an agglutinative language. Although it is a language of the same Altai family, Turkish and Uyghur lived a written life with an Arabic script and a consonant script. Mongolia and Manchu lived with an alphabetic script modified from an Arabic script. Moreover, Japanese is a native language that transforms Chinese characters into syllable characters. In the early days, Korean speakers borrowed Chinese characters and used the phonemic form as a form of syllabic characters (in the support notation) and then made the alphabetic characters ‘Hangeul.’When looking at the path the writing systems have developed, they are understood as ‘signs in an efficient way to visually express the spoken language of one’s own country (or ethnic group).’ It has an orientation that is wholly subordinated to the linguistic characteristics of one’s own country. On the other hand, all writing systems have secondary characteristics, including symbolism originating from the original picture. Therefore, an additional definition - “The visuality of the characters can be represented by iconizing the ‘thinking ability of mankind” - can be added here. Also, writing systems can be comprehensively redefined as “text is a ‘tool’ that permanently reproduces the verbal communication system ‘visually.’ It could also be viewed as an iconic sign system that conveys meaning by overcoming the temporal and spatial limitations of the ‘voice language’ of one’s own country (or ethnic group).
