韓國의 經濟成長과 企業發達方向 = A Study on Directions of Economic Growth and Business Development in Korea

The aim of this study is to point out the problems arising from the relationship between rapid economic growth and business development in Korea. In this study, emphasis is placed mainly on the study of and precise analysis related to the growing processes and present situations of larger enterprises, especially of monopoly and olygopoly business and the giant family trust (so-called Zaibatsu), which involve many difficulties.
The Korean economy has realized rapid growth and achieved higher level in its industrial structure through the past three five-year economic development plans (1962-1976) designed for nurturing strategic industries, i.e., heavy and chemical industries etc., and export industries. The economic development plans were carried out effectively so as to change consumption industries into heavy and chemical industries, and light industries into heavy industries. The existing food industries and textile industries have relatively declined, and to the contrary, electronios industries, machine industries, shipbuilding industries, export industries, etc., have developed as strategic industries.
All of these have resulted from the protection and nurturing by the government for the growth of strategic industries. Under such favorable circumstances, small and medium industries have grown larger and business has expanded, and at the same time new businesses were founded and expanded. Then the so-called Zaibatsu, monololy and olygopoly business etc., appeared, and monopolized the commodity market thus becoming larger and larger in quantitative scale of business.
As before mentioned, Korean business, and especially large scale businesses have grown and developed under governmental leadership. In this sense, we can say there is a close relation ship between Korean economic growth and business enlargement.
This study clearly outlines the forming course of large business, monopoly and olygopoly enterprises and the Zaibatsu, and market control of them. Cspecially monopoly and olygopoly enterprises are analyzed, and their financial standing, personal control by the family groups (Zaibatsu), and the view of business ethics and spirit of businessmen are studide. One of the important factors in the study of Korean industries is that of a view of business ethics and spirit of businessmen.
The fourth Korean economic development plan beginning in the spring of this year, 1977, appears to be oriented towards quality improvement in the social debelopment sector rather than external and quantitative expansion. Similarl, Korean business is now in the position to convert itself into quality improvement rather than external scale expansion. It is sensible to look for the direction that Korean business is going, along with that of business ethics and the spirit of Korean businessmen during this conversion time of changing the business environment within the cation as well as in the foreigh markets.
As a conclusion, the study stresses that business ethics spirit of businessmen should be based upon the spirit of the "Aaemaul (New Community) Movement," based upon the spirit of diligence, self-help and cooperation. The New Community Movement corresponds ets., in many points. The study also emphasized that Korean businessmen should change their unreasonable and preconditional way of thinking to reasonable ones based upon the spirit of the Saemaul movement.
